MOST NEGLECTED AFRICAN CARTRIDGE???

What do you think is the most neglected overlooked African Cartridge that few hunters use??

My knowledge of effective African rounds is limited--
if there are other better choices for African game please enlighten me!!

The 476 and 475 Nitro Express cartridges of all configurations.

No doubt your choices are correct.
However, what I think hopdoc is trying to asertain is the actual number, that use in Africa, the
cartridges he has listed.

All the cartridges he listed get a lot of "talk" on this Forum, and on AR.

From the amount of forum discussion, these cartridges would seem to be hunted quite a lot.

None of the cartridges he has listed are "mainstream" cartridges.

I have used the 9,3x74R on 3 Safaris and the 450/400 3 1/4" on one. All in double rifles.

I Found them excellent in every way.

520 grain bullet at 2100 fps.

Not really better than any of the other 458 to 488 class cartridges, but certainly dilligently overlooked.

Definitely, the .404 Jeffrey.

As Gregor Woods noted in his book, Rifles for Africa, the .404 cartridge in a magazine rifle was used nearly universally by the various African game-control departments. It combined effective "stopping power" with the least amount of recoil of the typically available .40-bores. Thus, for those using it in a tight situation the .404 Jeff offered controllability. For those reasons it's still a great big-game cartridge today, as well as being an "African Classic" in the traditional sense.

Too bad another fav of mine didn't make the list of "neglected" African cartridges: the ol' 300 H&H. It's also a grand old classic.
