O/U 9.3 x 74R?? Opinions??
      #66454 - 06/12/06 07:17 PM

Double Gun imports has a handsome new O/U 9.3 they are selling.

I am tempted. Looks like it may handle better in the hand than a SXS. Opinions??

hoppdoc,

Like many others, I prefer the SxS, for its traditional style, if for no other reason.

However, for many years my "go to" double rifle was a Valmet 412 in .30-06. It was scoped with a fixed 4x, and I want you to know IT WAS DEADLY!

I passed the Valmet along some years ago, but still sometimes think I should have kept it. If it had been a 9.3x74R I think I would have kept it for sure.

I still have one O/U double rifle, and a fine one indeed. It is a very high grade Merkel 323E in .375 H&H (gasp!).

This rifle is handy, quick, and well balanced. Workmanship is impeccable. It is a best gun in every sense of the word. But it is an O/U, so not much in favor.

My point is - there are a lot of fine O/U's out there ready to do yeoman service. You can usually buy one for less than a comparable SxS. Being "in favor" is a factor of opinion. What it feels like in the hand is founded in reality!

One of our prominent members, 4seventy, has the guts and gumption to stand behind an O/U. Maybe he will comment here.

One last comment: I would certainly stick with double triggers, whether in a SxS or an O/U. In fact, I replaced the single trigger in my Valmet with their double trigger assembly. A double rifle should have two triggers.

Unless it is a really good deal (2K or so off regular price for a new one or a screaming deal on a used one), I would hold out for a sxs due to my personal preference for that configuration.

500 grains--

Never had a O/U rifle but have several O/U shottys.

Other than a slower reload what are the technical defeciencies of a O/U rifle vs a SxS?

i duno i've got a couple or 3 and i kinda like the o/u. while i prefer a sxs the o/u i believe have given me better accuracy. my 06 for example will shoot both barrels into and inch at 100, and i've never had a sxs do that.i believe the sxs has better balance and you don't have to open the action as far to reload, but they still have more "class" than a 700 remy. all in all they have a definate place in the scheme of things, especially if you are one that uses a o/u shottygun much.

It has been a repeated statement that O/U are very accurate and great at reflex pointing.I have seen many selling in standard rifles cartridges and can't find history of premature death of such O/U's anywhere on the net.Others here will know far more than I ever could research and find.

Question--
If the O/U can stand the pressures of bolt cartridges one wonders if they would tolerate a 9,3 x 74R-286gr loaded 150fps faster. The added velocity would hopefully give deeper penetration and almost 5" less holdover at 300 yd distance with a scope. Why shoot at 300? Why not if you can hit with reasonable accuracy at that distance?

No one wants to hot rod any double and hurt it but it would be interesting to know if the 9.3 x 74R could be pushed to that level of consistent performance in a Double. A 9.3 x 62- 286gr can be pushed to 2500fps in a bolt.Could a O/U handle higher 9,3 x 74R pressures better than a SxS? Has a reasonable limit been found or are pressures lower than they could be and still keep a Double safe?
