Finally I can join the club
      #6645 - 08/01/04 10:23 AM

I just got confirmation that they had it in stock, my ordered double. A Blaser S2 Safari in caliber .500/.416. So now I can say I have a big bore.

As this caliber is fairly new all help and info on loads would be appreciated. In Barnes lates Reloading Guide they mention a Powder called H1000 but I cant find what it will be equal to, anyone that nows???

I hope to get the gun in a couple of weeks and after my trip to US I hope to have reloading stuffs and the first hunting will be on Warthogs in July or around.

Congratulations Christer!

Now that is what I call a grand Christmas gift, even if a little later.

Looking forward to hearing both of the Blaser and the .416 NE.

Great!!

That is an interesting cartridge and I know little of the Blazer rifles.

Is that the 500NE 3" necked down to .416?

Your follow up will be most appreciated.

Holmes, You are almost right about the cartridge. Here are the facts from Krieghoffs website.
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Rimmed Cartridge .500/.416 Nitro Express (3 1/4").
Because the ideal combination for dangerous game is a big bore double rifle chambered for a rimmed cartridge, Krieghoff has joined forces with WR Ammunition Company (Wolfgang Romey), the world renowned German specialist in big bore ammunition, to develop a new flanged cartridge - the .500/.416 Nitro Express (3 1/4").
The designation says it all. It is a 3 1/4" .500 caliber case and a .416 bullet - components which are popular throughout the world and readily available everywhere.

The ballistics are perfect for the use on dangerous game, similar to the famed .416 Rigby, but with the supreme advantage of a flanged cartridge.

The .500/.416 N.E. (3 1/4") provides:

Reliable extraction.
Simple construction using readily available components.
Maximum effectiveness with moderate pressure. Velocity and
energy are similar to the belted .416 calibers, such as the .416 Rigby.

These characteristics combined with its high energy and flat trajectory suggest that the .500/.416 N.E. (3 1/4") is itself destined to become a 'classic' member of the big bore cartridge family.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I tried out the balance of a couple of different guns and the Blaser was outstanding. I will post pictures as soon as I get it. There has been some complains at the saftey which goes back to safe when the gun is broken but since I have the same on my Drilling I don't think that is a problem even in dangerous situations, Everything has to do with practising.

Congrats CC! The 500/416 will some day be a classic double rifle round for all the reasons you mentioned. It may not qualify as a stopper, but that long .416 bullet will penetrate! Please post some pictures!

Thanks all

Sorry but the pics will take some time since I don't have it in my hand yet. When I have it you wont have to wait more than some minutes before I post pictures.

It will be scouped with a Swarowski 1,25-4x24 Circle dot illuminated, railed Blaser saddle mount. This only takes a few seconds to take on and off.

Sounds like the perfect scope for the job. I'd like to hear about the scope too when it is all working together.

John

I already have the same scope on my 375 and that must say something about my opinion when buying the second one.

Quick to shot with in short distance but also good enough to use for longer distances like over 200 meters.

Also try some of the Reloader series powders. They work really well in the large bore rifles. Reloader 15 is one that has been successfully used in a lot of the "old"
nitro cartridges.

What I have to do about the powder is to compare it to the ones I have accesable here and try my own loadings.

We can only easily get Norma and Vihtavouri.

I might be a little late with that comment, but you know I have a little catching up to do...

I have on of those on my R93 in 9,3x62 which I use mostly for driven hunts. I like it for that purpose, and the quality is as good as they get, but I find that the middle dot is a little to coarse for my taste! (@ 100m's it's about 10cm).

For africa I personally prefer the Leupold 1,5-5x24 which also has approx. 50% more eye relief on the 1,5x setting then the Swaro (and all other european makes...). It's simply the fastest scope I have yet seen - and the duplex works fine all the way out to 200+ meters without giving any on shorter distances!

Would be nice to hear about CC's experience with it!
BTW: Do you know why CC changed his S2 to .470? I thought that he had ordered it in .416/500???

Regards, 500NE

Looks like Vihtavuori N170 is very close indeed to Hodgdon H1000. Very slow-burning! Here're a few burning rate comparo charts that feature both: Chart 1 Chart 2 Chart 3 Chart 4

Christer is around from time to time as usual so can tell his own experiences if he sees the question. I think the .470 was there and waiting "on the shelf" so as to speak rather than have to wait for an order.

There is a thread where Christer has a video of him shooting the double.

Here it is

"Congratulations Christer, now you can join the rest of the nuts who go through the maddening process of working up loads that will regulate in your rifle!"

I though I was the only one going mad. I am litteraly(sp) changing my powder load by .5 grain at a time to get it perfect. I shot over 100 rounds of 235 grain .375 with 8-10 loads. But, as you know - once you get the right load, it's awesome to see those holes spot on!
