Let's see your glass bedding!
      #66376 - 05/12/06 03:28 PM

I'm about to bed my whitworth .458 with devcon 10110
Although I'm pretty sure I'm on the right path, I'd like to see what has worked for you and your big bore bolt gun.

I've heard of full length bedding for the big bores, and also of fairly minimal bedding.

Feel like sharing your opinions and discussing your perspective?

Just finished bedding my restock on a 505 Gibbs. With advise from Frank Wells, Frank's done lots of these, I made a very large recoil lug for the barrel and used lots of steelbed in that area. I bedded the action in a conventional manner, again with steelbed, with the recoil lug area and the flat under the rear tang. I installed two crossbolts in the regular spots. Finally, I relieved the inletting everywhere the action forms a wedge...especially at the rear tang. I hated making my skin tight inletting look sloppy, but Frank assured me this was necessary on a gun that would be shot a lot. I'm confident the rifle will shoot to it's potential and the stock has the most chance to not split.

The whitworth shoots M.O.A. [Re: Otto]

I'd been working on loads for this rifle, all the while making subtle changes and improvements.

First off, I installed a rear cross bolt and flush-fitted ebony plugs.
Next came a little bit of trigger work.
The front sight has been replaced with a (superb) NECG banded, hooded 'Universal' elevation-adjustable fiber optic front sight.
The stock ramp ejected itself 100 or so hot 350gr loads into the game.
The barrel has gotten a much needed recessed crown job, the factory detail there was just plain bad.
Finally, it's been fully bedded (and properly relieved) in Devcon 10110 steel compound.
I also had removed and relieved the original front stock bolt and properly installed it, flush-fitting ebony plugs to finish the job.

It finally shoots MOA
Just got back from the ranch where in late afternoon dim overcast I was easily getting MOA performance in a sitting field position.

Happy day

Good choice on the bedding compound. I've used Devcon plastic steel since 1972 for bedding rifles. It's the best, especially for kickers.
: I don't full bed the barrel unless it has a recoil lug as well.
; Cross bolts, done well, are great. Another method is to inlet a square piece of steel, just at the rear face of the recoil lug, full width of the action plus another 1/8". Either seem to work for me with no further trouble.

Daryl

I think this one really needed bolts, complete with heads and nuts.
I'd heard of Whitworth big bore rifles splitting stocks, it would only have been a matter of time with this one. The flush-fit ebony plugs are a nice touch too.

Had the rifle out again today on the 100 yard board getting the sights adjusted to hit a dead hold on the standing leaf.
Two quick shots are well inside MOA with the 75grAA2015br/350gr Hornady
That's around 2500-2550fps.
Before the bedding it was doing a tango dance between shots.

I'm happy with it so far.
Got to get my chrono, my rifle, and a sunny day together some time very soon.
