Im just in the planning stage so far for a medium caliber Double Rifle to be used exclusively in the US and Canada. Unfortunetly it will spend more time stalking paper than fur. When it does go to the field its adversary will most likely be whitetail and wild boar.
I like rimmed cartridges for doubles and single shots, so Im thinking something like 30-40, or possibly 303. Im open for opinions and other options. I have a 30-30 and a 45-70 DR, so Im looking for something else.
Im thinking the rifle should be comfortable to carry and shoot but I dont want a light weight. I havent decided yet but I might even scope it

Hey flowerboy!
I just had to do that!
Anyway, a nice choice for the caliber might be 8x57JRS. It is a rimmed 8x57 with the "new" .323 bore.
I have a scoped Dumoulin sxs rifle that is regulated for 196 bullets. I have also worked up loads on US available 170-175, and 200 grain bullets.
Pretty rifle and is a dream to shoot and will take anything this country has to offer. Maybe not brown bear? I would use something heavier!
There are many makers that can hook you up with this option and it makes for a powerful and liteweight rifle.
I agree, that on a break open rifle, go with the flanged round.
Just my 2 cents worth!

Another caliber to think about is the 7x57R or it´s larger brother 7x65R
Both cals make great ds for both shorter and the occasional longer shot.
The 7x65R packs a good woop I tell you.
My drilling, a Merkel 32 has the 7x57R rifled barrel and with a 175 grains bullet it´s pure death in that barrel.
Had a yearling pig enter a small opening during a stalking hunt, I was really looking for a rabbit or two but who is picky? Any way the red dot low in the shoulder of the smallish pig and boom, shot fired, connected and the pig just tumbled head over heels just like the sought after rabbits do..
When fieldressed the bullet was a through and through, both shoulderblades..
Ok distance was a mere 65 meter but still, any whitetail or other deer as well as yearling pigs are well within the limits of the kind 7x57R, needlees to say there really is´nt any recoil at all from the round.

Merkel makes a nice 30-06 and .375 H&H double.

Chapuis and several others, make 30-06,8x57, 9,3x74R and 375 H&H doubles. usually the 375's are on a larger frame and cost about twice as much. For North America I really like the size and the ballistics of the 9,3x74R.
PS. The 9,3x74R works great in Africa too.

For North America I believe it is hard to beat the 9.3x74R. That round will do everything asked of it in North America. It is big enough for the large bears, moose, caribou, and elk, yet the rifles come light and lively. These DR's are often scoped with claw mounted optics, which adds a lot of versatility.

Just took delivery of a NEW Merkel Mdl 141 in 8x57IRS. Really nice rifle for $3995 and good for almost all of No Amer game and most African plains game. Scoped it's an easy 250yd rifle which will handle anythig I'm going to shoot at.

Are you aware that Hornady are going to be making 9.3x74R, 286 grn ammo this year? Something that may influence your decision.

Try www.heym-waffenfabrik.de to see the O/U rifle. Then seewww.heymusa.com to order one. I think a 8x75R over a 9.3x74R with claw mounted correct scope is it.
