Combination rifle/shotguns
      #6627 - 07/01/04 10:50 AM

A combination gun is often a single barrel rifle and a single barrel shotgun, that's at least how I understand the term. So even though technically it is a double "gun" it is really two single barrels in one firearm.

I'm quite interested in getting a combination gun in 12 gauge and .222. I do a lot of varied small game hunting, almost every day, and think one of these would be quite suitable. Also during worktime I think one of these would also be handy.

I have posted on the classified pages that I am looking for a combination rifle and included the model Tikka M07 in the list. Previously I have turned my nose up a little at one of these as I liked the better styling of other Tikka's and other brands, but I have been thinking the external hammer of the Tikka might actually be a plus rather than a negative. With a bolt action with a magazine, you can have rounds ready in the mag to be chambered. With a single shot it takes way too long to load the barrel in a hurry. If you are carrying it around all day loaded it is dangerous but with a rifle with hammers surely this is quite safe or at least much safer?

Both the shotgun and rifle barrel could be loaded ready for use but with the safety on and the hammer uncocked. Something I would not consider with an internal hammer rifle.
I'm interested in anyone's experiences with combination rifle/shotguns or in using single shots and consideration of carrying a loaded firearm. Thanks.

Nitro, I have used a Savage marked Valmet in 308/12ga fro a few years on the farm as a tractor gun, had worked great for those pop up shots at foxes, and deer , I stayed with the iron sights as it got just a little to confusing trying to use scope on it

My experience is also with the Savage combos, specifically the lower grade Camp models and such.

The 22LR over 20G shotgun barrel was a great combination for rabbits and hares. If I was too slow on the break from the brush with the scattertube, I often got a chance with the 22 if the bunny stopped out a ways to check his backside.

I am a lousy shotgunner but always found the upper rifle barrel very accurate on these, probably due to its rigidity.

The version with a 22WMR barrel was a great coyote rifle. A slug in the lower barrel made for a good black bear problem solver in the event of a confrontation.

The triggers were pretty poor on the old Camper combos but I was too young to care!

NitroX
I had a Tikka 12/222. It had one hammer with a bbl selector.
It was scoped. The 222 bbl was on the bottom and there was a muzzle break of sorts for the rifle bbl only. The rifle shot very well, 5 shot groups were well under one inch.
If you get one I think I still have a set of scope mounts. The reciever is grooved and they slide on from the rear. The shotgun bbl shot slugs good too.
