Air New Zealand gets tough on excess baggage

By New Zealand correspondent Peter Lewis

There is a new warning for trans-Tasman travellers with Air New Zealand clamping down on excess baggage.

It has almost become one of the time-honoured traditions of holiday travel - squeezing more than the 20-kilogram allowance into your baggage and then slipping it through check-in.

Depending on loadings, staff often turn a blind eye if you are just a little bit over the limit.

But now Air New Zealand is trialling a new electronic system that not only weighs your luggage, it calculates your excess charges.

Five dollars a kilogram on domestic New Zealand flights, $10 a kilogram across the Tasman and up to a whopping $35 a kilogram for long haul flights.

In May/June 2006, I hunted in NZ. I flew with Air NZ on both International & Domestic routes and had just on 30kg of hold baggage, plus cabin baggage and only an economy class ticket. I did not have to pay any excess baggage charges. The trick is that when you book your tickets, you make sure that you tell the booking clerk that you are travelling with firearms and that you require their complimentary "Sporting Equipment Baggage Allowance" for the transport of your firearms. The Sporting Baggage Allowance will get you an extra 10kg's of hold luggage for free.
I and a mate who travelled with me had absolutely no problems with Airline Staff and found them to be most helpfull. I can honestly say that I have always found Air NZ to be a firearm friendly mob to deal with.
Hope this is of assistance

There is no exception allowed for additional sporting equipment currently. I just booked a flight from the states to NZ and the baggage limits are 2 bags up to 50 lbs with a total of 62" of total length. An extra bagg will cost you up to 200$nz. Dang they are really hammering you on the baggage.

Steve, I was surprised to hear that you couldn't get the "Sporting Equipment" allowance of an additional 10kg of hold luggage for free. I've checked again on the Air New Zealand web site and they still advertise the free "Sporting Equipment" allowance. I also checked with Air New Zealand staff at the Australian airport where I am based and they also confirmed the baggage allowance as I have previously described. As an ecconomy class pax on Air NZ you are entitled to a max of 20kg as part of your normal allowance & an adiitional 10kg of "Sporting Equipment" ( provided the item is obviously sporting equipment ie: golf clubs, gun case, etc) In total you can have 30Kg of hold luggage.
I also know that if you exceeded this limit you can expect excess baggage surchages to apply.
And just for the record I'm not an employee of NZ, and I generally travel QANTAS where I am a member of it's Club & Frequent Flyer programme. I only fly Air NZ when I go to NZ hunting as it's much easier to use the same carrier for International & Domestic Flights. And as I've said before I have always found them to be very helpfuly with the carriage of firearms.
I hope you manage to get your additional 10 kg of baggage allowance.
Rod
