WTK: Africa on the Target of Opportunity premise ?
      #64789 - 28/10/06 12:22 AM

Newbie Question: Can you hunt in Africa on the "Target of Opportunity" premise? ie. I book a hunt for say Buff and Leopard and while I am in the "hunt" on the ground, I look up and see a nice Lion or a nice Zebra....can I opt for an IOU of sorts and say I will pay all the fees associated with its kill and take the animal and pay the fees when I get back to camp? *Is it not normal practice for a games-keeper / official to often come with a PH and Cl;ient on a scheduled hunt? I ask this because I am planning a hunt now and would hate to miss an excellent spur-of-the-moment opportunity for a nice trophy while in the field 8 hours away from a Games Official's office. Thank You.

fanofdbls , unless you have a fixed package hunt booked, and depending on the number of days booked, there will usually be other animals on quota. This is esy to find out once you start talking to booking agents/outfitters!

Since you say you will be hunting Leopard, baits will be needed for that unless you will be hunting them with dogs, or tracking. Your baits can be trophy animals, and only the trophy fee will be considerable higher than strictly bait animals, which are usually cows of the species. In most places you must be on a 21 day safari to take lion, but Zebra , and most common plains game can be taken on a buffalo/Leopard hunt of shorter duration. There is no need to go to any office to get license for an animal of opertunity, if the PH has it on quota, and he agrees. You pay the trophy fees for what you shoot at the end of your hunt, in most cases, uless, as i said before, you are booked on a package hunt! !

Most plains game is on a target of opportunity basis, as long as the species that you want to take is available on quota. Exceptions would be roan, sable, nyala and eland, and perhaps a few others. Big ticket items like buffalo, lion, elephant, hippo, croc are generally on a reservation basis although if you hunt late in the year (Sept or later) there may be an extra left on quota that you could get for a bargain.

Some countries and indeed some areas require you to have purchased an individual licence in advance for each animal you plan to hunt. In these countries/areas, If you don't have a licence for a particular species beforehand then you won't be allowed to hunt it.

Other countries issue licences where a variety of animals are allowed to be hunted (subject to your paying the trophy fees (usually) prior to leaving) in specific packages and yet other countries allow you to hunt whatever you want and pay the fees afterwards.

Some countries have quota systems for either all or key species which can also affect things.

Regarding game guards etc, some countries send a game guard on every hunt and some don't..... come to that, some countries send a game guard on hunts for some species but not for other species.. and just to complicate things further, rules change from time to time......

Africa is a big continent and every country has it's own game laws, so you really need to specify which African country or countries you're considering.......

I'd also advise you not to take the word of an agent or another hunter for what you can and cannot hunt or any other part of the local game laws etc....... make a point of communicating with the individual safari company direct for this kind of info.

That last comment isn't supposed to indicate that none of them (agents & other hunters) know squat, it's supposed to indicate that most of them will only know part of the whole story and/or may be out of date with their information or may assume that the rules that apply in one area or country will apply in all areas or countries.
