Sighting survey
      #6474 - 04/01/04 06:05 AM

Greetings all,

I'd be interested in knowing what everyone uses on their SS rifles, optical or iron sights.

My singles are currently equipped with irons, but I'm seriously considering scoping one or two, at least for load development.

I'm using rear peeps, receiver & tang, with front beads and hooded globes. Calibres range from 22LR to 500NE.

If you're using a scope, what brand, power, and mounting system are you using?

Thanks to all.

Well, here's my set-up.

Ruger #1 in 300 H&H.

The skeletonized factory quarter-rib (q-r) mount was replaced with a Mould's rib which has more Weaver-style mounting slots, sits low on the barrel and doesn't contact the receiver at all (the factory q-r touches the receiver, affecting harmonics when the barrel heats up after a few shots.)

The Moulds contains a dovetail for the factory open sight, which is thankfully a fold-down proposition, but it's presently zeroed for 50yds.

From Brownell's I received and installed a NECG aperture sight that fits the Weaver-style base. I'm still testing it. (NECG also offers one for Ruger's #1s & M77s that fits the grooves in the factory quarter-rib).

If the NECG apertrure doesn't work out, XS Sights (formerly Ashley) offers a low-mount Ghost-Ring "back-up sight" for use on Weaver-type bases.

NECG sells replacement front sights for the #1s & M77s. They come in 5 different heights and sport an easily seen 3/32 white bead. The one on mine works best for the distances I'll be shooting using either the aperture or open sight. (Ideally, I want the aperture zeroed for 2" high at 100yds).

That covers my iron-sight options for any close-in hunting I'm likely to do.

With the aperture off and the factory open sight folded down, my scope is a matte Burris 1.75-5x20mm sitting in low, matte 1" Leupold QRW rings. This set-up puts the scope very low to the barrel and, with the right amount of eye-relief, it comes up quick on the target without rubber necking. The scope is presently zeroed for 275yds, or about 3" high @ 100yds.

I'm still developing loads and such, but this dual set-up of scope and iron sights allows for several options, depending on the distance and terrain conditions involved.

If the scope failed or got damaged, or we were in dense timber or bushveld conditions, I can quickly remove it and go with a pre-sighted, "ghost-ring" peep or open sight.

All of my single shots including ones well used and ones still to be used have basic iron sights.

Hello Nick,

I often wondered what the Moulds rib looked like. Have not seen one in person. Is it lower than the factory quarter rib?

I also use an NECG rear peep on my #1 with their white bead up front. I like the appearance of the Weaver style NECG better as it is not as "blocky" in appearance as their Ruger style sight.

Sounds like a very nice rifle you have built and the calibre is one of my favourites.

The scope I'm playing with is a Leupold 2x7x33 with Warne rings. Nice and low also. The power ring will probably remain set at 2x.

I'd really like to machine a small filler for the rib, Moulds or factory, to fill the slot where the factory rear folding leaf goes so I could simply remove the sight. This would make for a pretty rib.

Regards,

Mine wear scopes.

Ruger No.1 S in 338 Win Mag currently wearing 2.5-8x Vari-X III, but I need to put that scope on the M70 300 H&H. So...

I will take the 1.75-6x E Vari-X III off the No.1 RSI and put it on the No.1 S in 338 Win.

The No.1 RSI is a 7x57 and since I'm robbing its scope for the 338, I'm in the market for a 1.5-5x Vari-X III to put on it.

The No.1 416 Rigby that I had wore a 1.5-5 Leupy on it. Foolishly sold both rifle and scope.

The No.1 B in 270 Wby Mag wore a 2.2-9x Swarovski 30mm Habicht. Didn't like the B version of the No.1 and didn't like that fuel drummed sized and weighted Swarovski scope. I no longer own either.

My Ruger Number one in 25-06 wears a Leupold Vari X-II 4-12 power scope with AO. It is a great whitetail rifle.

This year I want to get a Number One Tropical in 416 Rigby........I will most likely put a low powered Leupold on top. Either the VX-II 1-4x or the VX-III 1.5-5x

Holmes:

If I'm not mistaken, there's a pic of the Moulds mount in the Brownell's catalog, above the description. The front part of it is similar in shape to the factory q-r, but the Mould's is a 2-piece set up. The bottoms of both pieces contact the barrel fully, unlike the skeletonized factory q-r, and the rear piece extends out and just above the receiver to allow for more rearward adjustment to suit your eye-relief. I haven't measured it, but I believe the Mould's is slightly lower than the factory q-r.

Yes, the NECG Weaver-base aperture does appear less "blocky" than the one with the Ruger-base, which I tried but didn't like for that reason. Still the Weaver-base aperture is not perfect either. Almost ideal would be the XS/Ashley low-mount Weaver-base "ghost ring," except it doesn't sit right on the cross-slot but instead extends flat off the back. XS does make a "high-mount" Weaver-base ghost ring, but that one sits TOO high, even with the various tall NEGC front sights.

I've long wished that Williams would make their WGRS receiver sights for Ruger 77s, BRNOs/CZ 550s and other rifles with integral receiver mounts, one that would sit flat on the rear bridge and fasten tight to the integral grooves.

Trust me, it's been frustrating testing the various rifle peeps & apertures you see in Brownell's, trying to find one that'll work on my #1, that's easy to adjust, locks-in tight, sits low and looks esthetically "correct" for the rifle.

Shooting with peeps is pretty much a lot art anyway, except for a few old-timers and those recalcitrants like me who were lucky enough when young to have been shown how accurate they are. Frankly, out to certain distances you really don't need a scope.

As far as scopes, I stay with the low powers, in the 1x-4x variable range. FIXED low-power scopes are okay, but I like to keep my options open so I prefer variables. Also, I want the scope sitting as LOW on the rifle as possible, so that it comes up fast - sort of a "point & shoot" thing, without needing to slide your cheek all over the stock trying to get the eye-relief and focus right.

I do have a Leupold 2x7 in medium-height mounts for the #1, but that's used only for load development. Once I've found a certain bullet/load combo that's accurate, I reinstall the 1.75x-5 Burris and re-zero for that load if I'm going to hunt with it. (FYI: I use a Leupold Var. II 1x-4x in low-mounts on my .375 BRNO 602).

Ditto on the WGRS. Seems like a natural application to me.

I really like the function of the NECG rear peep. I'm using the .375" front NECG bead and the combo works very well for me. It's just the damn thing is butt ugly!

I'm going to take a Dremel to the sight and try to give it some semblance of integration. May end up with a $70 chunk of useless metal when I'm done but it wouldn't be the first time!

I'm also going to email Williams regarding the WGRS and the #1. Perhaps if they were to receive enough queries, they'd fire up the R&D boys....

With the Moulds rib on the #1, is one able to mount a peep in a position closer to the shooting eye than when using the rear scope ring reliefs?

Holmes:

Yes, on the Mould's the location of the peep/aperture (say, the NECG unit) is going to be closer to your sighting eye because the last cross-slots come back over the receiver. This then puts the peep unit A LOT CLOSER to your eye than it is on the factory's rear q-r scope-ring notch.

I currently only have one, a Ruger something or other in .223. It has a 4x12 Simmons scope and no irons as it would be silly to try and shoot Ground Squirrels at 200 yards with iron sights.

Granted it looks a little top heavy but it works in picking heads out of the Sage Brush.

Mickey,
Would you please quit posting that picture. Temption is a sorrid and terrible thing. Everytime I see that rifle, my hand drifts for the phone to call one of the custom rifle makers to order something like that.

Quit it!
