9.3x72R regulation issue
      #64276 - 19/10/06 07:44 AM

Just picked up an Austrian hammer cape in really good shape. Had to make a few small parts and put it back on face (it was barely off) but otherwise all was well.

Now the problem...

The gun shoots to the left of center by about 4" at 50 yds which is fine for the rear sight BUT it also has a folding tang sight that doesn't have anywhere near enough windage adjustment.

I am shooting S&B and I haven't tried any reloads yet, but that seems like quite a bit to work against. I have reloaded and regualted rifles, but as I understand, the 9.3x74R has a pretty standard loading with the 196gr and a multi diameter bullet design (besides being .363 or 4 instead of .366)

The gun seems to have been made in 1911 if I read things right. Is it possible that it was regulated for a different load?

thanks.

Tom

Hi Tom,
we had in Austria at that time 3 different types of 9,3x72R
loads.
1.) BP loads with lead bullets
2.) Nitroloads with flat bullets (soft point) with reduced
quantity of powder.
3.) Nitroloads from Sellier&Bellot and DWM with 193 grain
spitzer and flat softpoint bullets.

I use an old o/u sidelock DR custom made in Vienna in the above mentioned caliber with extrem good hunting results for deer and also for short distances of boars during chase hunting.
regards Johann-Austria

Thank you Johann
I haven't chronographed the S&B, but I am guessing that I either need more speed or a heavier bullet.

Before I go out and have a mold with an inbetween size bullet made (235gr possibly) I wanted to see what else was out there.
Somewhere I thought I saw that at one time there was a 300gr bullet listed but I don't know if it will stabliize in the twist in my rifle.
I also don't know if a 1911 gun was around when the "hotter" versions of the round became available.

Hunting with that sidelock double must be teriffic
Cheers

Tom

Tom,

If it is shooting to the left, you don't need more speed (assuming the right barrel is the rifle). A bigger, slower bullet may bring it back right, but it will also shoot higher.

Thanks L2S. Forgot about the elevation issue. The gun already shoots about 3" high at 50 yds. I may settle and simply make another front sight for it with elevation and windage built in. It will probably take less time than going through everything else.
Thanks

Just finished making the sight and it appears to be a good fit. Had to make it eccentric by .030 to match the rear so hopefully it will do the trick. Not looking forward to dropping another $50 on a box of ammo, but it won't bother me as much if everything shoots where it is supposed to .

Cheers,

Tom

Hopefully someone is reading this

After making the new sight, it appears as If the load had to be regulated and that changing the sight can't change anything more than it already has.
For reasons that I haven't figured out yet, the folding peep isn't in the same plane(horizontally) as the rear sight so even though the new front sight helped, the three still don't align properly.
Sound confusing? I hope so, so at least I'm not alone
Actually I have some ideas but I don;'t want to make any permanent changes yet.

The good news is that that Remington slugs (that seem to be much easier on guns than the Brennekes) shoot quite close to the rifle rounds and in the same spot vertically.

Just have to move those rifle rounds 4" to the right.

Was there not a factory 9.3x72 laod that ran 198gr. flat nosed bullets at 1,900fps?
: If safe to load it, a bit more speed will drop the elevation somewhat.
: It's always been an intriquing round to me for a deer, black bear sort of rifle.
