Still doesn't know much about the case or whether the rifle and the case belong together. The lower text on the case lid stands for "1st Worc. Reg:t" (First Battalion, Worchestershire Regiment). It is the unit, where CB Westmacott served as a Lieutenant and Captain. He was in India at least from 1888-1898, and the rifle seems to date from 1879. If the rifle was sold as new in Calcutta, this MIGHT imply that the case is original and this CBW has been the among the first owners -- nothing for sure, though. He retired in 1920 as a Brigadier General, and at that time he was told to have sold his firearms and took up archery.

I managed to find and contact his descendants from NZ. I got a preliminary reply already, and I'm hopeful. Although, finding a critical piece of information is highly improbable, of course.
