Help with bullet amounts?
      #64027 - 14/10/06 07:53 PM

I am going on a 2x1 10 day safari in TZN at the end of the month. Species on license;

2 Cape Buffalo
1 Grants Gazelle
1 Cokes Hartebeest
1 EA Impala
1 Warthog
2 W.B. Wildebeest
1 Zebra

Guns the two of us will be sharing;
1 500 NE Searcy DR
1 375 H&H M70
1 338 WM Tikka

The DR will be using Woodleighs(570grs). The 375 will be shooting North Fork softs and woodleigh solids(both 300grs) and the 338 will shoot NF softs (225grs). Should I bring a few solids for the 338 just in case?

How much ammo would you take for each gun and what ratio of softs to solids? Since we will be travelling together we are each allowed the standard 10 pounds of ammo (I think). Thanks.

30 softs, 10 solids for double, 50 softs and maybe 10 solids for .375 (I would leave solids at home for .375 and take 10 more softs), and 60 softs only for .338

I think that I would have to agree. I would also weigh the ammo. I had a cranky check in person at the Tampa airport and they made me take my ammo out of my gun case and weigh it on the luggage scale. I was under the 11 pound limit with 40 rounds of 458 Lott and 40 rounds of 375 for 16 day safari.

Split the 458 to half solids and half softs (500 gr woodleighs) and for the 375: 20 235 gr barnes x, 10 300 gr barnes x, and 10 300 gr barnes solids.

5kgs of ammo is the limit.

This doesn't leave much when you have a 500 Nitro or a 505 Gibbs.

Getting caught with too much ammo could cause real problems. I have only been called back AFTER check in by an over zealous baggage handler (the manager's words, not mine) who felt the weight of the bag with the ammo in it and said it weighed too much. I had to open the bag and show him the ammo and I had a whole load of bullets in it as well - hence the extra weight.

All in all it worked out OK.

bulldog563,

500 NE for the buff, take 10 solids and 10 soft
375 H&H, 10 solids, 30-40 soft points
338 win, softs only. 40-50 should do

Some ph's think softs are perfectly fine for buffalo and solids are only required for elephants or rhino while other ph suggests solids for buffalo, which type is your ph?

Cheers
Johan

1. Leave the .338 at home. Too many guns is an inconvenience.

2. Take 20 rounds of .500, the rest .375. I would take all solids for the .500, or else all solids except 2 softs. I would take all softs for the 375 except 4 or 5 rounds.

I disagree with 500grains. Three firearms between two guys is fine. Three firearms for one person is a hassle as he says.

Split your ammo in two for each calibre and have each person carry half. As long as it is legal for you to do this if one guys bag goes missing you still have ammo to use. If you need to split the rifles, pack the .375 and .500 in separate cases and each hunter has one, perhaps the .338 with the .500. Note have a look at licence costs etc as splitting ammo and rifles may cost more in Tanz, I'm not sure.

I like soft points for buffalo so would take a mixture of softs and FMJs for both the .500 and .375 for the buffalo. But mostly SPs for the .375. All SPs for the .338.

In reply to:

Double check by weighing it. If too heavy and I doubt it, reduce the .500 ammo a bit. You won't use 30 .500's unless you do a lot of shooting or shoot targets.

Ndumo's answer looks pretty good. It depends though on what you want to use. The .500 just for buffalo and then the other rifles, or try out the .500 on plains game as well. A tracker will be able to carry it with you for when needed.

It looks like you will have a fun trip so good luck and post photos and stories when you return.

Have all the ammo ready. Decided to take 30 rounds for the double (half and half). 50 softs and 10 solids for the 375 and 60 softs for the 338. Should be plenty of ammo especially since I may take my bow along as well.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Factors I would consider
1. Do I want to leave the PH with any - likely he'll only be interested in 375 so may over indulge in that calibre
2. Assume yr carrier will screw up zero on them all - difficult if the 500 is a double,
3. So for the 500 , 5 rounds apiece to ensure still all ok when you get there and build confidence and worst case for each buff 7 rounds each to down yr buff - 1 soft, hit but not down, 3 follow ups (solids) as he legs it, 2 more on a charge, longish shots pre charge/running away in the follow up, 1 insurance when he finally keels over. Call it 25 rounds all up - 5 softs, 20 solids
4. Leave the 338 at home, but know what yr 375 does exactly with Federal 300 grain TBBC and sledgehammers (should be same) at 50 - 200 yards and mount a variable scope , 1.5 - 6 (with Holland detachable mounts in case the 500 fails) and be able to shoot it over open sights. Assume Zero is really buggered when you get there and you need 10 rounds each, TBBC and Sledgehammmer to get it back. Assume the 500 also knackered when you get there and need the full 15 rounds sledgehammer solids for the 2 buffs.
Assume 25 rounds to down the rest and you'll leave the PH at least 20 rounds - suggest softs
5. Overall

.500 5 softs, 20 solids
.338 none
.375 25 solids, 55 softs
