2002 Archery Deer

This was my first whitetail buck ever.

He also had and unusual double row of spots down the top of his back.

Ann

Nice buck as a first bow hunting kill. I bet you were happy.

Bowhunting is something I would like to re-acquaint myself with. As a kid I started off hunting with a bow, but must say wasn't impressed when the arrows fell out of pigeons and rabbits with the target then de-camping.

But while deer hunting locally it is quite common to quietly walk up to a sleeping fallow deer often less than 20 feet away.

And I thought often of you bow hunting in Africa when stalking through the grass and coming across warthog well within bow range near Thabazimbi.

I need to re-equip but first want to acquire a new boar spear and come to really close quarters hopefully this winter.

PS What brand of bow are you using and what are your recommendations?

John,

I think I would be modest to say there is nothing like a bow kill. Perhaps a successful spear hunt would be right up there as you MUST be close to your game which often means MANY tense moments waiting for the right moment.

I do not know what the availability is for archery equipment in Australia but what I recommend you do is try as many bows as you can. Shoot several as each manufacturer has several models available. Go for the one that fits you the best. There are many very nice brands out there.

I shoot a Parker and a Golden Eagle. They are both excellent bows. I've killed game with both.

Bow hunting is a fantstic sport. I have learned more about how big game behaves and reacts in the past 10 years of archery hunting than the I could learn in 100 years of rifle hunting. Archery hunting has helped me "read" sign and trails better. Understand that scent and wind direction rules over all else. I have seen mature whitetail bucks pick up the scent of a hunter that had past over a trail 8 hours earlier during a day of driving rain........and avoid the area! Amazing. Archery hunting has made me a better rifle hunter. I enjoy both seasons.

Do you have bows down under? If so, the easiest way to get into the sport is with used gear. For some reason many archery hunters, at least here in the states, are so caught up in new technology that they go out and buy new bows every year or so. The resale value of used bows is not real high because of this practice. You can pick up top of the line bows that are 4-5 years old for 1/4 what the price of new bows are. These "used" bows kill animals just as dead!

I have been thinking of trying traditional archery next season. Up until now I have used compunds for 99% of my hunting. I view the traditional move as the "next step" in the archery challenge for me. I have taken over 50 deer with my bow and a nice bull elk. The rush that I get from a successful archery stalk/ kill is amazing. It is why I hunt.

IronBuck

Good idea to look for used bows. If bought from a archeru shop my guess is that they won't be a lot cheaper than new, but direct. Good idea.

A lot of hunters down here bow hunt pigs and goats. My experience is that the ferals are a lot easier to hunt than deer and can be approaced closely with care and luck. Then it is up to the bowhunter to place the arrow.

Also goats often will only run 800 metres or so away and stop to feed again. And can again be hunted, easy with a rifle, however if may be harder with a bow the second time.

This makes great practice for more serious game.

Iron, Actually, that is my first buck. I've killed several does before but the only bucks I'd ever see were forkies and spikes and I will not shoot them. I'd rather let them go and grow. The does make fine meat for my freezer and I will always take one of those before a spike. Bucks are trophies first to me.

I've also acquired my first recurve and will see how I do learning to shoot it. It is used, in fact it is probably older than me.

John,

Just be careful with used stuff. Make sure it fits you properly and that the limbs are sound. If they are cracked they can be very dangerous upon drawing them.

Fit is very important with a compound bow.

Ann, you bring up good points with the draw length and the limbs. I see MANY hunters afield with bows that have a draw length that is to long for them. The best way I have seen to measure your ideal draw length is to place a yard stick to from just below your "adams apple" and extend BOTH arms forward with hands pointing straight out. See what the measurement is at your fingfer tips. This is the draw length that you should be shooting. Other variables come into play, but this is a good starting point. Many compounds (But not all!)are adjustable over over a several inch range. Usually 2-3". You can e-mail a manufacturer to ask questions regarding a specific bow.

I agree with using does for meat. We have been doing this here in Pennsylvania for the past few yeras and are starting to see many trophy bucks in the 140-150 P&Y range.

Here is a picture of my best whitetail so far. I took him in the 96 season. This is a 155 class Western PA buck:

To be honest I juts have too many animals still to hunt with a rilfe befoire I egt bored of rifles and pick up a bow. I have thought about it a couple of times believe me. But with the current prices on bows and equipment I could buy a nice rifle for cheaper no kidding.

Especially if I go for a second hand rifle I could pick up something in a big calibre even for the same price. I suppose one day when I have more time I will pick it up but it will be a while still

That's a true dandy of a buck, Iron! I'd think I died and gone to heaven if I saw a deer like that.
