WDM Bell's Pistol?
      #63369 - 02/10/06 09:16 PM

I am trying to figure out what caliber and model Bell's Mauser pistol (AKA: Bom Bom) was... In "Bell of Africa" he writes, "...a Mauser pistol which could be used as a carbine.." Have been thinking he was probably using a Mauser Model 1896 "Broomhandle" with a detachable stock. Can anyone confirm? Also have been looking through my library but can't find a reference to a cartridge or caliber for it. Does anyone know? Was it written in one of his books? If so, where? Any help appreciated.

No idea but it does sound like a Broomhandle in 7.63 or 9mm Export.

its probably a 7.63 mm as that was common for hunters and millitary personell to buy one if they needed on, and he chased away a group of native warriors with that one time, as Capstick wrote about it, and those ten rounds would probably be very handy in case of a ratrap.

China bought a million of mauser pistols and Astra copied it , it was a pistol that was better than a singleshot pistol to have and who knows, if i were in Africa at that time, would feel more certain if i didnt have a psitol that could be turned into a carbine easily and have several ten rounds clips handy if something unexpexted would happend?

Bell's "Bom Bom" was indeed a 7.63 'Broomhandle' Mauser. Here's a link to a previous thread with photos of Mauser pistols belonging to fellow forum-ites (self included!):

Thanks for the link. I was asking mainly out of curiosity but also because I have come upon a very nice restored 9mm (converted from 30) and have been considering getting it.
