my new Drilling
      #63342 - 02/10/06 01:03 PM

I know nothing about Drillings so, of course, I bought one I liked. Hopefully I didn't get screwed too badly but I plan on keeping it so it doesn't matter too much.

It is a R. Bessel and Sohn of Sagan. A 16x16x8x57r with an extra set of barrels in 8x57jx8x57jx16 is by Theodor Kummer of Suhl.

It is a boxlock with Greener crossbolt and greener safety. Pop up sight on the shotgun barrels and fixed on the rifle ones. Side clips and fully engraved. Horn trigger guard and horn pistol grip. Shotty barrels are 27" and the rifle 24.5"

both barrels have a scope base but I have never seen on like it. I will post pictures later.

Mick

What a great set! It is common to find a conventional double shotgun and single rifle plus a set of SXS shotgun barrels, but there are very few with a set of DR drilling barrels.

In my opinion, you got the best of the best. I'd love to see some photos, including the scope bases. Does it have a proof date on the original barrels?

Sounds nice Mick. Both 8mm's are .318 bores? If you can not find ammo there, I'll check with Luigi.

What a find! Fabulous set!!

The scope bases will probably need to be changed to a swing mount; I doubt you will ever find ring sets. ...probably ought to sell me the gun and be done with the headaches.

Nice gun. I bet JJ at Champlin Arms could make a set of rings to fit those bases.

A "Drilling" and a "Double Rifle Drilling" 2 bbled set.....
Truely one of the best "Hunters Guns" anywhere.

Damn Mickey thats nice!

I agree with Luv2safari, its much too complicated to get rings for that wee beastie and you'd better ship it to me to save yourself the hassel.

I've fixed the ring problem. I had my local gunshop drill and tap a set of Weaver bases into the existing bases. He said he epoxied them also. They are aluminum so they will save some weight. This way I can use Weaver rings for any scope I want.

I have a silver Tasco that I have been saving for a special application and this is the scope I will start with. It is a 6x16 so I can use it as binoculars also.

Can't wait to go to the Vintagers with this set up next year.

WHAT?? No duct tape? You sure half-assed the job and don't deserve the gun.

no duct tape...I can't believe it...

It looks like you need to stock up on some RL 15 and 196gr Hawk bullets. Have you shot the rifles yet?

No. I don't have any dies until I go back up to BC next week.

Do you have a good load to start with?

I looked in Sportsman's Warehouse today and they didn't have anything.

I need to slug the bores I think also.

Aren't these supposed to have a year of proof on them somewhere?

OOOHHH, MAN! I just gave away my extra set of RCBS 8X57JR dies to a new drilling owner friend in Las Vegas. He may sell the drilling. If he does, I'll get them back.

THAT DBL SHOTGUN SET LOOKS TO HAVE A 9,3 BARREL FROM THE PHOTO. ???

The proof date is often on the bottom barrel near the chambering designation (7.8 X 57 or the like) It will read month, then year in most instances...9/19 for Sept 1919, etc. If it is in the 30s, you will have a pre-war gun made at the right time. It is my opinion that the mid 20s to late 30s guns were the best.

Just sell me the damned thing and be rid of all the anguish over these issues! Man, you are hard headed. Are you German or Scandinavian...?

All the rifle barrels are marked 7,9x57

The original barrels are marked 10 19
The rifled barrels are marked 2 28

No it is a rimmed case. I'm not one who buys the rimless is okay stuff. I've seen two 375 hollands pop over the extractors and leave the shells in the chamber and don't need to worry about that happening also.

I wonder why they built the double rifle /shotty that way instead of the rifled tubes positioned side by side? Can you feel any balance differences this way?
That is a beautiful rifle! I'm envious of your find!

You may have 8X57JRS barrels. That makes for much easier reloading with more common .323 bullets. Slug the barrels. If they are .321 or bigger you can use regular S bore bullets of conventional design. Be sure to use the milder J bore loads, however. I have never liked the hotter JRS factory loading; it seems to loosen the guns up much faster. That extra 50 to 100 fps seems to be just that extra straw on the camel's back.

Very nice catch Mickey. And a neat and unusual barrel setup too.

The calibre is great for lots of big game. I have a moose hunting guest right now that is using an 8x57JS. What do you plan on trying it out on?

Might I also suggest some thick rubberbands to help stabilize the silver colored Tasco in addition to the duct tape?

Erik

Mickey,

I have found baling wire to be great material for attaching all sorts of items together. I recommend it highly!

Man, why didn't you show me that drilling in NY? Might have kept me away from a certain H&H Royal.

I would have showed it to you but it was too far to walk to the car.

Yeah, it's in the gun safe now.

By the way, I have always used standard 8x57 dies to load for the 8x57JR. I just didn't use the expander button so the neck would grip the smaller bullet straight from the sizer. You could also get a .318 expanding button from RCBS, but I never thought I needed it.

Regards,

Curl

Thanks Curl,
I just PM'd another member about this very question last night. I'm tempted to have the expander button turned down to work if I have problems with it removed. I was wondering if the sizer will leave it tight enough. It sounds like my guess was right.
Thanks!
AkMike

You've got yourself a pretty nice set there! congratulations!

aKmike: To make it functional with both barrelsets you need to substitute the left shotgunbarrel for a riflebarrel on the doublerifle set: This because the front trigger works on the right barrel, and the lower barrel when the selector is set on "Kugel"="rifle". That way you get both triggers to work on the shotgunbarrels for instinctive shooting, and the riflebarrel ready as you slide on the selector. When you put on the doublerifle set you've got a functional doublerifle, and the choice of the shotgun if you'd like when you slide the selector backwards.

It's more common with the riflebarrels on top, but that put a lot more stress on the action, and the setup isn't very functional with BOTH barrelsets..

I've got a Sauer und Sohn drilling in 16/16/7x57R and enjoy it a lot! It takes some shooting to get used to, but when you do, it is a wonderful gun! I whish I had a double riifle set like yours to go with it.
A cheap option is to get an insert barrel, that's what I have in mind, and I'll put it in the left barrel..

All the best with Your new Drilling! I bet you'll never part with it as you get to know it!
