Air Namibia - firearms carriage charges
      #63190 - 29/09/06 04:04 AM

When flying Air Namibia from Jo'burg to Windhoek I got slugged for R100 per firearm as a "firearms carriage fee".

Has anyone else ever had such a fee imposed on them?

I know it annoyed me. Not only the additional cost but also the fact they wouldn't accept foreign currency. I didn't have even Rand on me yet, so had to go to another floor of the airport to find a forex bureau, change money into Rand and then back to the British Airways office (BA's office was handling the Air Namibia fees).

I have never heard of this fee before on the net neither had Karl Stumpfe the PH in Namibia.

Sounds opportunistic and predatory to me.

It's the "money grubbin" principle.

You were commited to the flight and were easy pickin's.

Did or would they charge you the same fee to get the firearm out of the country?

How many $$ is 100 rand?

The only upside I see---Is if any weapons are lost you should be able to go after the airlines with more success.

I've flown in and out of Namibia on 3 Safaris, and have never had a firearms carriage fee imposed. You're the first person I've heard experience this.

I flew back with SAA and they wanted to charge excess baggage for the firearms case.

However the cashier girl when questioned by Karl about when they introduced charges for firearms cases then went to the check-in moron and said no weight charge on the firearms case is applicable. BTW the check-in bloke appeared barely literate, type very very slowly with two fingers.

hoppdoc,

100 RSA rand is about 13,5-15 US$ depending on rates and place.

I think these extra charges are disgusting.... golfers and other travellers with extra luggage should also pay extra, or? For some reason the hunters and shooters are treated like pests. After an experience with BA I will never travel or do business with them and I would rather choose Iran Air.

I would not be surprised if passenger soon has to pay extra if they are taller of heavier than the airlines average passenger..

Cheers
Johan
