Love at first sight? H&H 577NE
      #63069 - 26/09/06 09:41 AM

First id like to say thanks for all the wonderful information yall have provided on this site. I am new to DR's and this forum and it has been a wonderful source of rudimentary (and lots of in depth) knowledge. Getting to the subject I found this 577 on the Westley Richards website and felt like i had fallen in love.
http://www.westleyrichards.com/gun/used_guns_2_product.php?id=25579
It is to me the quintessential English Best big bore stopping rifle. From the beautiful firguring in the stock to the ornate but not overdone engraving on the reciever, it looks like my dream rifle. Have you ever "fallen" for a rifle or gun after seeing or handling it and if so which rifle was it/did you ever come to own it?

Thanks again for the great forum and helping to nurture my fledgling interest in dr's and African hunting,
Chris

Hello and welcome.

Lovely gun, though a trifle expensive, yet worth it im sure.

Are you intent upon buying a Double then Chris?

I am breaking in with a BP double soon.

Cheers

Ben

Beautiful Rifle.

Yes, I have fallen in love with a few rifles but sadly most were unavailable to me for various reasons..... All except one that is.

Thanks for the welcome Ben,
Yes, it is "a trifle expensive," (gotta love English understatement)and being as I am a poor college student and my "heavy rifle" battery consists of a scoped 30-06, I wont be making any trips to Africa with any English Best guns any time soon :-/ I hope to someday afford a double (perhaps a Searcy or a Merkel, which i have fired in 470 and really enjoyed) but for now my love is an unrequited one.
Bulldog, yours is indeed a lovely rifle in an interesting caliber and is made all the more interesting by its history. A really cool double with lots of character!

CC,

You've really got to start dreaming big. Check out this trio of rifles on the Champlins site.

WR Matching Trio

The price per gun is ONLY $80K. Quite a bargain compared to the rifle you've fallen in love with. Essentially, with the WR option you'd be getting two guns for the price of one relative to the H&H and the third rifle is thrown in at a "discounted" $65K. Were I buying a set of rifles priced higher than most houses, that's how I'd justify it to myself and spouse. LOL! Consecutive serial numbers, fun variety of calibres....just cant beat that deal with a stick!

Best,

John

CC

I thought that trio was a bit over priced for what they are.

If I had any sapre cash I would buy a Holland Sidelock for the $80k.

And I think Hollands hold the value better, have more of a market and I would also get better calibres.

IMHO, 8mm and 375 FL are too close to each other.

Just my HO.

500,

You are right about the two calibres being too close. The practical man in me would have done them in 7mm, 375, and .470 (or maybe .450#2). I'll bet whoever is consigning these rifles is wishing he'd done the same at this point.

Best,

John

John,

That's exactly the combination I was thinking

7mm or 30 cal
375
470

The problem with adding a 470 is the action needs to be bigger
so I can see why they went with the 3 calibres, personally 7mm/30 cal and 375 would have done me as a pair.

I would still buy 3 Hollands over that trio !!!

500,

Agreed on all counts! The guy was clearly trying to maintain similar weights and handling characteristics. A very good idea but not really possible in a trio unless you allow a lot of cartridge overlap as you noted. The original client could have saved himself a major hunk of cash as you say by simply going with the most useful pair (7mm and .375) and calling it good. I don't suppose he really cared though as the purchase probably wasn't about utilitarian concerns...more about one-upping a buddy who'd bought a matched pair probably.

Best,

John

Personally, if i were going to buy scoped 375 and 30 caliber rifles, I dont think Id want to buy 160,000 dollars worth of double rifles. Instead, Id probably want spend 4000 on custom bolt actions and spend the balance on a nice BIG double without that horrible apparatus on top of it. But considering the price of the trio, Id say for must of us the argument is merely academic.

The only chap i can imagine is Searcy for anything near affordable on a double 577.........

Cheapest i have seen so far for this big round in a double has been about $40,000

Halowell had a Belgian double .600 NE for $18,000 for ages.......one of you guys bought her??? Marcel Thys....

Ben
