I have never heard of a chamber problem with the NO.1, only with the 77, and I believe some of them had short chambers, and that is fixable...

404 barrels can come in .418, .424 and .423 so unless one stipulates it is possible to get a different bore size and many of the old guns like the 10.75x68 had a .424 bore size...best to slug and chamber cast the old guns..Allways a good practice....

As to the recoil factor of the .404 being mild of recoil, that was simply by the fact that the original loads were a 400 gr. soft at 2000 to 2100 FPS depending on barrel length...thats a sweet load and a decent killer of DG...but crank that puppy up to 2653 in a 26 inch barrel with 95 grs. of IMR-4831 and it will drop all your dentures and/or fillings.

The 404 is my choice of all the DGRs in a bolt gun..It has served me well and in some cheeky spots and it always came through, thus I have confidence in it, and thats what counts...I shoot it well from all field positions and never give recoil any thought, something I could never quit so with my 458 Lott or especially my 505..I could shot them both off my hindlegs standing up, but put me in a compromising position and they hammer the crap out of me, thus I always had to think "don't flinch, squeeze the trigger" before I shot, something I don't have to do with a 404 or 416..Bottom line is I know my limitations ....

Thanks for the info on the #1, Ray! I wasn't aware of so much variation in bore diameter among .404s.

I'd prefer a bolt gun, if possible, like a little used Parker-Hale, so we'll see.

If the .404 #1 is built on Ruger's Tropical model, I believe those are heavy contoured 24" barrels, except for the .45-70, which is a 22" tube.

I've done some research on the .404 while I've been looking around. A number of sources confirm that the original loading used a 400gn bullet at a relatively tame 2125 fps for 4020 ft-lbs of M.E. (A 300gn load went 2625 fps for 4595 ft-lbs of M.E.).

Some of these sources also suggest that with modern powders, brass & bullets, you can get that 400gn load to 2300 fps without much difficulty, but then I'm sure things increase noticably on the receiving end. No doubt Ray's 400gn load doing 2653fps from a 26" barrel makes sighting-in off a bench as much fun as a root canal without novicane.

That 2653 load btw was throughly tested by NorthFork bullet company on sophiscated pressure equipment and it was relitivly mild in pressure and got 2590 as I recall in his 24 inch barrel....The load is 95 grs. of IMR-4831..I got that load out of a gun magazine some many years back in an article by Hoyt Bodding or something like that, he is a well know writter, but I can't remember his last name.

Yes, Holt Boddison was the guy, and he was an off and on gun scribe for years, He hunted Africa a good deal and was well versed in his knowledge of that continent it seemed...

He was a great fan of the 404 Jefferys and spot on in that load and powder for that caliber....IMR-4831 is the ONLY powder for the 404 Jefferys according to my chronograph....

Hi all:

Thought I'd punt this old thread back to the top of the list and see if anyone's got any new info on rifles in .404 Jeffrey.

I've been hoping that CZ or, maybe, Ruger would do a run of them. Winchester's custom shop stuff, while nice, is a bit too pricey.

I've also been watching for a Parker-Hale, such as might turn up at a state-wide gunshow. But no luck thus far.

About those #1's in .404 Jeff. I could have gotten one from the warehouse for like 400 bucks. A gunshop in town bought them, and then sold them for 1000 or 1200, and now they are up to like 1500! AHHH! LOL!

Buy a CZ action from Brownells, a barrel from Lothar Walther in .423 and have Jim Brockman in Gooding Idaho put one of his English style laminate or walnut stocks on it along with a barrel band front sight and swivel..for a rear he makes a talley base with a pop up peep and he will grind the receiver an install them along with a new bolt handle if you like...That is my new gun and I have about $1500 or less in it..It is slick, holds 5 down easy an one in the tube, so I can load it on monday and shoot until saturday and have 7 buffalo shot....Mine is in laminate and set up as a hunting rifle..I will checker it when I get home from Tanzania, but will use it as is for this trip...
