2006 Fall Hunting?
      #62732 - 20/09/06 02:19 PM

A few big game hunting seasons are already in full swing here in Alaska and some parts of Canada, in other parts of North America the seasons can't be very far off. What have you been hunting or will be hunting and what are the firearms will carry on those hunting trips?

I'm going to live vicariously through the members here because I can't be out there.

I want to hear from all of you!

Good luck in your quest.

DP,

I've been invited by a good friend in Helena, Montana to come elk and deer hunting. I drew out of State tags and will be leaving Nevada for Montana on Oct. 19. The area has some blue grouse, also, so I'll take my new to me Geyger drilling in 16/16/9,3X74R with a 1.25X4 Schmidt & Bender in swing mounts and my FN action Sako in 375 Wby with 2x7 Leupold VariXII.

I didn't draw a single tag of any kind as a resident of my own State, and now I have to go out of State. I'll be a Montana resident next year and will buy tags over the counter.

I am sorry to hear you won't make it out and hope it is a temoprary thing.

I know how you feel. We did not draw any tags anywhere this fall. We have been out playing with the local elk a bit and have seen a couple of bulls that should go about 380 or so and one monster bull that will crowd 400 I think. We watched kick a small 6's ass this A.M. Then my son has to call me from Ca. and crow to me that he has filled all his deer tags and bear tags plus a couple of hogs in the last 3 weeks just to make me feel worse. I too would like to hear what all are doing this fall. Good luck to all and be safe out there.

So, if you don't draw a tag, there isn't any over the counter or open areas in Nevada to hunt? That's terrible! There are a lot of drawing areas here in Alaska, but except for Bison and Musk Ox, there are open areas that can be hunted without a drawing permit. I sure feel for you guys.

My reason for not being out in the mountains is back surgery in a few weeks. I'd have to crawl out there now. Maybe by next August I'll be back chasing those curly horned rams. And maybe with a new Hagn.

Nevad really sucks in that respect, there are no over the counter tags at all. My next door neighbor has put in for elk for 22 years straight with no tags. Would not be so bad if I didn't to look at them every time I get to the hills. I do love to watch them but would rather see those big old bulls on my living room wall!

My understanding is that Arizona is the same way, do you know if that is correct?

AZ is pretty restrictive, but one can get javalina tags most of the time...not always...

Hunting in general in Nevada has been on a headlong decline for about 25 years. A non-resident can pay the price and get a tag from an outfitter he books, but this is not a privilege afforded RESIDENTS! Follow the $$$$...

We may put DOW commissioners on the unprotected vermin list soon...

I've thought many times about applying for hunting tags in Nevada, but based on what you guys are telling me, I can't. I can't see myself as a visitor to your state taking a resident's hunting away from them. I just don't get it. Don't think I could live in a state that treated their residents that way.

Went out after stone sheep at the beginning of August. I had hoped to get out elk hunting but it does not look like that is going to happen but I have a couple of hunts planned in November for a big mule deer.

DPhillips,

If you do get an Nv. deer or elk tag let me lnow as we have been seeing some grand examples of both here the last couple of weeks. We live within easy driving distance of both and you would be welcome.

Honestly, if residents have to draw a tag to hunt, I'm not sure I'd feel right to enter the draw.

If I do though, I'll definitely give you a holler.

It doesn't bother half of Ca. to get tags here and you will pay bigger fees like them, so go gwt one next year and come on out. We will find some good one for you.
