Have we lost sight of the reason and fun of DR's
      #62614 - 18/09/06 08:16 AM

A couple of question for all to answer which is not having a go at anyone, just an observation that has not only come from the forums but also talking to people in general. No right or wrong answers, just everyone's opinion welcome.

I welcome other members to post similar and better put questions along the same lines.

A couple of questions:-

Have we lost sight of the reason Double Rifle were made and what they were supposed to be used for ?
ie Are we trying to make tack holers out of them ?

Have we lost sight of the FUN of owning, looking at, playing with and hunting with the DR's we own ?

I look forward to your replies.

500,
I don't think we all have,I have just had my Army and Navy a little over a year now.I worked up a decent load, practiced alot and then took it to Zimbabwe on a buff hunt.My rifle is over 100 years old and is still good at what it was designed to do.I could have bought a new scoped double for less but it wasn't what I wanted but I guess that is why we have so many different types of doubles. If I feel the need for a super accurate rifle I will grab my custom 375 H&H but nothing beats carrying around a nice 9.5 lb English double in the tall grass.

I think my earnest reply is "NO".

I like DR's for what they were made to do.

But most importantly, I like DR's.

As a DR newbie I enjoy the uniqueness, the art and the timeless functionality of DR's. Here is a hunting tool over a century old and still without equal in a Do or Die hunting crisis!!

We have bolts with MOA accuracy past the capabilities of the shooters,we have semiauto firepower, but when survival is in the mix informed hunters will want a Double.

It is a unique weapon and can be an art form. Most hunters cannot afford but would love to own one. It is derided as impractical/snobish by many who cannot possess one. Ignorance or envy? Both, I guess!!!

I apologize to all irritated by my perpetual questions but I ask because the fund of knowledge on this forum is so substantial. Ask these questions on AR and you would get --static--confusion and poorly informed replies.

DR's are so much fun that with NEW GUY's(Double Gun Imports) help I have acquired my second Double Rifle-a 500 NE!!

Want a new Double? Contact Chris for a deal! You can't go wrong!! He's the man!! Can't wait to shoot that puppie and book a Dangerous game hunt for 2008!!

Thanks to all for their most kind sharing of knowledge. Why?Knowledge is Power!!

Cheers and good hunting to All!!

I really like my SxS rifles.

Each of them has a lot of character and they all seem to radiate a sense of history.

I'd never be upset with a double rifle that ended up being a tack driver. Handling and shooting my double rifles has grounded me quite a bit though in the distinction between great shooting rifles and great hunting rifles.

I own and have access to super-accurate bolt guns. I can give myself a lot of space between me and the game with a stable and solid 1/2MOA scoped .338
It's just not the same kind of experience as walking in and getting close with the 8x60 double rifle.

Either gun can get me a clean kill on good sized four legged game here in north america. I'd rather take the slinky little BLE though, just because I really like the double rifle.

I don't think we've lost sight as to what a double rifle is and what is was made for.
I love my double and have a lot of fun using it and carring it on a hunt when other rifles are lighter and maybe more accurate.
With regard to accuracy, today's technolgy alows us the opportunity to fine tune a precision instrument and have even more fun in the process. Realizing a double rifle was meant for usually up front and personal hunting. Handloading and custom ammo allow these same gun's to be tack drivers.
There are guys here who have made 200 - 300 yard shots with them and love their guns even more now.

I can only speak for my ownself and give you my observations based on the folks who showed up for the DRSS Hunt in August.

Speaking for me. . . .No, I haven't lost sight of the reason and fun of Double Rifles!

Judging by the smiles and attitudes of those attending the DRSS Hunt, I don't think they have either.

Most of the tack driving/MOA/rimless high pressure round oglers are those who haven't had an opporunity to experience the true delight of double rifle chambered in a flanged round or that ends in the words "Nitro Express".

The basic principle of a double rifle is to hunt dangerous game! They are designed to deliver two large caliber bullets at modest velocity and pressure, with ease of extraction or ejection, in tropical heat, at close range.

Nothing points or comes to your shoulder easier than a good double rifle! I try to find excuses to hunt with my 450/400 3 inch, every chance I get. It has brought back the pleasure and pure enjoyment of stallking game to get up close. What a thrill!

My next double rifle I hope will be a 9.3X74R topped with a scope and claw mounts! That will have me set for just about everything I need!
Just my opine!

500 Nitro,
Lost sight of the reason and fun, me no! I sometimes can't believe how much wonder and pleasure an inanimate object can give. The power of these old guns is truley astonishing. The care taken in every step of assembly and manufacture. I have been told that if originally owned by the noble or elite, the Kings, princes and Nizams probably had little regard for their weapons as they were just another of many possesions. Now a great deal of them have fallen into the hands of the truely appreciative, caregivers and admirers. Give me a 8 or 10 dram gun that will shoot into a pie plate at 50 to 100yds over a synthetic 1/2moa gun. Who has owned them, where have they been? I often think about the artisans who made these guns, did they, would they have any idea that their creations would still be in use 100 years later. What would they think to find out that the gun they had made for some count had found its way to the low deserts of CA. for use on pigs and chukar or was/will still be on its way to Africa? No I haven't lost sight of the reason I own these guns. I just hope the next owners value them and get as much pleasure from them as I have.

I just love hunting with a nicely balanced open sighted double, but love the fact that I can also use one with a QD scope for Twilight baiting. Thus saving the need to carry a second rifle os , and if it also happens to shoot accurately, great.

I think all who have had a yen to own a double rifle since a young age, never forget what the double rifle is, or what it was made for! Old steel, and wood just has a feel that trained fingers can detect in total darkness. Nothing else feels like that.

The ballance, and pointability of a good double rifle, be in old or new, is something that is rarely duplicated in any other type of rifle. This is added to, by the real utility of the double rifle as a "HUNTING RIFLE" that has no military background, but was a sporting rifle from the very start.

As someone already said there is that "IF THIS RIFLE COULD TALK" mistique, that sets the holder to dreaming of days gone by, and exotic places, when seemingly iron men, walked amoung the beasts of the world, beast that could, and were, and are still quite willing to make you into a page in recent history.

The double rifle is, most times, only associated with dangerous game, but it is far more than that, it is after all a hunting rifle that is chambered for cartridges from the little rook rounds to 2 ga rifles, and are as at home in the deer woods, as they are in the path of a chargeing elephant, depending on chambering. There is no other rifle, in my view, that says "HUNTING" better than a good double rifle.

Today, a great deal of the fun of owning a double is it's care and feeding, and the researching of the older ones. In this area, no other type of rifle has been so documented regarding it's history, and ownership.

Though I love all types of sporting firearms, nothing in the firearms history, holds the pride of ownership as does the S/S double rifle! FORGET??? Absolutely not, not in this life time!

No,and its the history behind them and their sheer beauty and effectiveness that makes me adore them......ever since that day quite some time ago now, when i couldnt understand why this odd rifle had everything a shotgun had, including size, and yet was a rifle......

Brings daydreams of the Raj to mind,of unexplored jungles.....

When i finally get my first double.....it will be used. For as much as i can use it for. And not hanging on a wall and adding to drunken discussions.

Worst thing you can do is leave them sitting around rotting.....they need use just as a car does.

The double is the ultimate in firearms....the most specialised, most expensive and most elite that money can buy. A truly sophisticated weapon.

Just look at the examples!!!!!

500grains

Good post.

For me personally I like my doubles for what they are meant to be used for. Hunting large dangerous game and also quick shooting at closer ranges perhaps at moving game.

From my recent safari I can sure say it gives one a lot of confidence to have a large bore double when approaching a large game species, potentially dangerous, at close range. Especially when he or she has lots of buddies hanging around as well. The second barrel gives a lot of cofidence is the first shot is not perfect or if the buddies join in. The larger bore also gives confidence that at least the target will be downed as well if the shot is not an instant killer and break bones etc.

My .450 with FMJ regulates very well and is quite accurate, however with SPs I still need to improve the loads. Hasn't stopped me from using them though.

I dream of also having an accurate flat shooting double loading in some calibre so the versatility is increased however. And not having to pay excess baggage on a second rifle for this purpose!

I don't think I have.

I perhaps ask "more" of my medium bore than a big bore, because its a scoped medium bore. I like to use it for stalking game in addition to driven game. I have a great time hunting with a double rifle!
