DOUBLE MODIFICATIONS-FACT OR FANTASY??
      #62491 - 15/09/06 02:07 AM

I am curious what substantial modifications can be done to a DR outside of sights, recoil pad etc.

I am sure forum members can state whether specific mods are possible or pure folly.

Is it even possible to ream a DR to a different hull casing size without destroying the solder between barrels? Obviously you would have to reregulate and proof the gun again. As an example--If I wanted to have a wildcat 9.3 bore based on a 375 Flanged cartridge casing I would ream out the 9.3 x 74R .

I would assume that reboring the barrel bore of an existing Double barrel is out of the question as well. due to the soldering involved etc.

Comments??

I haven't had it done myself, but I've heard of numerous .458win to 450no2NE modifications, sometimes without the need to re-regulate too.

Double rifles are re-chambered and re-bored all the time, and some such conversions are very common. Twenty years ago .400/.360 Purdey doubles were quite common, but are much harder to find today. Most have been re-chambered to 9.3X74R. Likewise, many .400/.350 and .350 No. 2 rifles have been re-bored and re-chambered to 9.3X74R. Such conversions don't make much sense today because the old cartridges are as good as they ever were, and components and loaded ammo are available now. However, it makes a lot of sense to re-chamber in order to get rid of a really dumb DR caliber choice - like .458 Win Mag.

A fair number of the older doubles have been wildcatted just to clean up badly pitted chambers. A fair number have been re-bored to a larger caliber because the bores were shot out.

I've seen the very conversion that you mentioned - 9.3 to 9.3 with a .375 Flanged Magnum case. This rifle was rechambered (and reproved) to use the .375 case because the 9.3 chambers were badly pitted. Otherwise, that conversion doesn't make sense because almost nothing is gained.

Is it worth the hassle to get a 375 Flanged out of a 375 H&H?
The resale would be better and the Double more reliable.
No proofing would be needed for the lower pressure cartridge.

Bad idea or just not practical?

The bad idea is chambering it in .375 Belted Rimless H & H Magnum to begin with. Converting to Flanged Magnum is a chamber sleeve job. Re-proof would be required. The best answer is sell it and buy a Flanged Magnum.

hopdoc,

I agree with 400

And everything I have seen where people rechamber DR's do so to increase value. To be honest with all the stuffing around and time and effort in trying to find or make a "cheap" DR you might as well just buy one and get on with having fun.
I think in the end you don't end up saving anything and often end up having trouble selling it afterwards anyway.

Just my HO.

Where do you come up with these questions?

There was a thread on "Pimping the Double"....
