Starman,

Thank you for an incredible post. That is perfection indeed, whichever way you look at it!

Good hunting!

Those are nice, but I believe mine is going to be better!

Seriously, it does make me anxious.

That is a pretty nice bunch of hard kickers. Should make a cool splash the first time they go to Africa.

I am guessing around $15,000 each since they are all take-downs.

I hope my 300 Win. Mag. Hagn is as nice looking. Should be here around next May.

Josh

Aren't those rifles made by Hartmann & Weiss using the Hagn action? Seems they were offered for sale at Westley Richards a while back and were labeled as H&W.

Those are Hartmann & Weiss, a friend of mine has these now. Replacement is pushing $90,000.00+ for the set. Pictures do not do these guns justice, they are WAY past any custom Hagn gun I have ever seen..

Sinner - can you elaborate? Are you referring to the workmanship, materials and finish, or have the actions been worked over as well?

Apart from a Hagn buit rifle, who in addition to H&W does this kind of work on these actions?

J,

Hartmann & Weiss was founded in 1965 by two James Purdey & Sons master gunsmiths. There craftsmanship is on par with Peter Nelson (PV Nelson), and Peter Hofer. They put an extraordinary amount of time into each and every gun they produce, I imagine these were around 500 hours each. They use Hagn and Heeren actions for there single shots, as well as a full sidelock ejector in single barrel form.

Hagn in Canada actually also sells the actions or barreled actions, in the white, so anyone could make one if they so wish.

These three guns in particular were manufactured as exhibition show guns, and were on display for about a two years before they were sold off. They are magnificent in person. If you haven't yet had a chance to handle one of there guns, I suggest you do so, every single detail is flawless.

Jack Haugh in Indiana. I have two Martini & Hagn built single shots from these two fine builders, one 'plain' in 300 H&H since I wanted not to detract from what I believed was the pure beauty of the design and one I purchased that they had built for someone else, with some very nice engraving that was done for them by a very good 'local' engraver in 6.5X55. Then, after a lot of negotiating and lusting from afar, I just acquired this Haugh built beauty from a dealer I have worked with a lot over the last few years in a 470 NE (in transit, his photos):

"Replacement cost" to me was under $15,000. An original Martini & Hagan, at least when I bought mine right before the dollar took a dive, was about the same, and even today around $15K with modest engraving. I am sure the H&W version costs a lot more, but as I have not seen one, I can't comment on why there should be much of a price difference other than it is a 'name' German builder. As far as the level of finish and fit on my 300H&H at least, I would be hard pressed to see where it can be improved that much as the work Ralf and Adolph do is just top level. Dave

It should be as my all Hagn built 300 H&H is superb. Dave

I have a gunsmith in the USA, Steve Dodd Hughes, currently building me a Martini Hagn single shot in .30-06. It will be ready for engraving in Apr 09 I hope and when it is done I am off to Hampshire in England to shoot a big Fallow stag, with luck. The action is a great one. best, Mike

I am curious - as some people are having Hagn actions built into rifles elsewhere, what are the reasons? Is it the waiting time, price, other factors, or just personal choice? How does Hagn's work stack up?

I have a real desire for a cased take-down Hagn rifle - my head is telling me 30-06, but my heart may rule and it will probably be an improved .303

I think it is a combination of factors: First, time. Martini & Hagn is a small shop and the time needed to turn out a complete rifle (action, barrel, stock work, etc) is far more time consuming than the time taken to turn out an action. I assume the action itself is the work of one craftsman while the stock and the 'actioner' role is filled by others. That would allow more actions to be completed than complete rifles. Second, some like the work of a particular stockmaker, such as Steve Dodd Hughes, an acknowledged master in wood. He doesn't build his own actions, so the superb Hagn action would be a natural for a custom built rifle, just as I assume the original owner of my Jack Haugh wanted to have him stock and engrave it while recognizing that he did not build his own actions or that he simply wanted a Hagn action done in a Haugh built single shot. Same situation in a H&W stocked and completed rifle using that shop's single shot action of choice, a Hagn. Dave

Senor Jabali, there are a couple of articles about the Martini-Hagn action on the web which you can google up, one written by the gunsmith who is doing mine. He thinks (and so does another head of a large London best maker) that it is probably the strongest and most functional single shot action ever made. I am having mine made by Hughes for a number of reasons but at the moment with the dollar where it is they are great value I think. Mine will be a 1 piece as the extra $5000 or so didn't seem worth it to me. That same "head of a best London gunmaker" with whom I was sharing a pint with recently mentioned they maybe considering buying a few actions and building the rifle up themselves and the price was considerably higher:),
best, Mike
p.s. if you are going to use it in Spain or for travelling in Europe, the .30-06 might be a better choice. If you pitch up at your local gunshop here asking for some improved .303 rounds you might have a long wait

Are the Hagn actions .actually made in BC? A friend in Germany was told by a German gunmaker that the receivers are made in Germany under license.
