WHICH DANGEROUS GAME DOUBLE IS NEEDED??
      #62334 - 10/09/06 12:05 PM

Possible Safari Scenario--

You are going after Dangerous game-- LION,BUFF, and ELE and need one Double to handle ALL of them. Assume your PH will be of minimum assistance backing you up and you have to finish anything you start.

I assume you should be prepared to be spooked suddenly in thick terrain by Lion, Buff or Ele as recalled in multiple other threads recently.

This type hunting is exactly what the Double was designed for--

Would you choose a
500 NE
470 NE,
450 class,
450/400 class?

Would you want a detachable scope?

WHY?

Would you want or need a detachable scope for precision shots out to ?100yds on the LION? What distance would be adequate/reasonable with a Double?

Would you even possibly consider a 470 with detachable scope?? or just resign yourself to getting much closer to that MGM lion to shoot that Double?

What one Double is the best compromise for encountering all the animals noted?

Thanks for any and all comments. They are much appreciated.

Because of the Elephant involved I would choose a 500 unscoped. I wouldn't scope it because I like iron sights in general and the distances involved with this type of hunting doesn't really call for a scope for me.

500 Nitro Boxlock Ejector

No Scope

Why
I am used to a 500 Nitro
I can shoot accurately out to 100 yards with open sights.
If I spooked a Lion at 100 yards I would either get closer to take the shot or not take a shot.

A 500 Nitro would handle all of the game listed with ease, as would the others, I just prefer 500 Nitro's as they hit harder.

Just my HO

500 Nitro

At the moment I own a Merkel 470 but will be selling it as I have a SEARCY 450/400J on order . This Rifle will be around 9.5lbs and have a detachable Schmidt & Bender scope on it. This I would consider to be more ideal for my requirements .
PS, I prefer to take one rifle only.

I would choose a 450NE or 470 or 500 without much preference between them. But when I was close to elephants I would be second guessing my choice if it wasn't the 500.

If the lion is at 100yds, I would hand the tracker my DR and take from him my scoped 375H&H. Prior to approaching the downed lion I would clear the chamber of the 375H&H, replace the spent round in the magazine, and give the 375H&H to the tracker while taking back my DR.

"Assume your PH will be of minimum assistance backing you up and you have to finish anything you start."

With this in mind, I'd say either the 450NE or bigger. But then I've only shot 1 elephant, and that was with a 375H&H. However, I was still able to finish what I started myself, with no interference from the PH. He was mostly occupied with keeping an eye on other nearby elephant anyway. But next time, I think I'll use something bigger, to be on the safe side, and because I don't blindly trust that anyone else will take care of my safety but myself.

Any of those would work.
More power is better IF you can handle it as well as a lighter gun. The 500 has too much recovery time to suit me.

I have been really happy with my 450 No2

Since lion is on the menu I would want a scope fitted in QD [claw] mounts.
Lion is probably the hardest trophy to "get".
If only taking one rifle [something I would NEVER do], I would take my 450/400 3 1/4" double fitted with a S&B 1.1-4, with its illuminated reticle, in claw mounts.
