BPE express history.......
      #62131 - 05/09/06 09:31 AM

Hello all

So as is unfortunately often the case.....i am having difficulty with some of my express rifle history.

So,im thinking black powder, early days really......

The .577 bp express.......3" of course.......was this an elephant gun? was it only used for brain shots? were the massive 8 bores and beyond always relied upon?

Am i correct in thinking that this round had the equivalent energy of the .375 h&h mag,yet wielding a .577" projectile.......i realise the penetration ability is much lower, yet i am still a little baffled.

Any and all comments of great interest, and much appreciated.

All and any stories of hunters using the .577x3" bpe and even its smaller brother the .500x3" in elephant hunting,if even applicable...appreciated greatly.

Ben

Impirevr, the 577BPE, was considered to be a heavy medium bore, and was only rarely used for elephant, and then only in emergencies,by Ivory hunters. Even the 8 bores black powder rifles were considered a little light for relaible use on Ele. , and the 577BPE, and 500BPE were large plains game/cat rifles in Africa. Where the 577BPE shined was in the jungles of India for Tiger!

I wouldn't be afraid to take on Buffalo with either the 500BPE, or the 577BPE, as long as there was a good man behind me with my 470NE, or 500NE double rifle! The old BPEs are fun old rifles!

Ahh i see,thankyou dugaboy1.

Werent the 4 bores famed for having penetration problems versus the 8 bores? or is this just myth?

What sort of energy does the .577 bpe have? i cannot seem to remember....4,000 ft lbs odd, correct?

Thanks again

Ben
