SCOUT SCOPE ON A DOUBLE??
      #62099 - 04/09/06 09:52 PM

Anyone use a scout type scope setup with extended eye relief on a Double?

It would seem this set up with the claw mounts positioned further forward would help with a scoped double if one is shooting prone and tends to "crawl" the scope. The usual eye reief of 3-4 inches diminishes markedly and can get you whacked in certain situations prone with the scope on a higher power. Happened once to me with a 416 Remington bolt. It was not fun.

I am considering scoping options with a future 9.3 Chapuis Double.

Suggestions? Experience??

Hey. I don't have a problem with scope in well executed mounts on Doubles. I don't have a problem with Mercury reducers and Foam Rubber black recoil pads. I don't even care if you can get a plastic flamethrower front site.

But NO SCOUT SCOPES. PLEASE.

Why on earth would you be shooting a double from the prone? That, I would think, would be asking for injury since the body couldn't absorb the considerable recoil properly. I imagine that a scope mounted farther foward would also completely ruin the balance of the gun. I imagine a "scout scope" configuration would put the scope out over the the foward hand resulting in the total loss of balance. Recoil reducers and F/O sights are ok if one feels they're necessay on his or her gun but I would have to give the scout scope on a double a big hell no unless it could be balanced without drastically increasing weight.

Think about mounting a Swarovski or a S&B 1.5-6x42 with illuminated reticle on your Chapuis 9,3x74R.

Much better field of view and light gathering than a scout scope.

That's what its looking like!

Probably a railmount scope to make fine adjustments with..Problem is that Chapuis will need the scope mounted to regulate the rifle at 100 yds/?meters. I am waiting to hear from Swarovski to see if they have a claw mount adapter for their specific railmount system. May have to use a S&B instead.

I would sure like to have more eye relief than the 3" the Swarovski possesses. The Leupolds I shoot have 4".

"Scope Eye" is a cancer to achieve shot consistency.

The one thing, you need to watch very closely, is the weight of the scope, and mounting system, and the hight it places the scope above the rib. The heavier, a higher the scope is mounted, the more it will effect the regulation of the rifle.

I have absolutely no idea why you want a rail mount scope, as they are almost always too heavy, usually mount too high, and the fine eye relief adjustment is no better than regular rings. The regular rings also gives you a wider choice of fine scopes as well! One you might look at is the Luepold Vri-X III 1.5-5X30mm, with a German No 4 post, and crosshair reticle, with the tip of the post illuminated. This scope is a special order item, and is in the $500-$600 range. This scope is perfect for double rifle use.

Dugaboy1--

Thank you for your comments!!
I agree that the toughest secure scope setup with the lowest mass and the lowest height above the barrels should have preference.

If the standard scope rings and bases/scope is lower than the rail job it should get the nod if secure. It was my impression that the railmount was no different in height and much sturdier than the other configuration. If so I may be wrong.

A lighter low power variable Leupold may be satisfactory as it wouold have the 4" relief I like. The 1.5 x 5x variable or the 1.75 x 6 are pretty tough scopes although recoil from my rifles has broken no less than 5 Leupold scopes in the past.Hopefully the smaller lighter weight scope would hold up and not affect the regulation of the barrels at distance.

Thank you for your insight!

If you want lower and lighter than forget the EAWs.

You may need to go to claw mounts or something else.

I have the Chapuis factory pivot mount on my 9,3. I have 2 scopes in rings a Leupold 2.5x8 and a Swarovski 1.5-6x42.
The scope is at a perfect height for the standard stock. The scopes go on and off with no loss of zero.
Both of these scopes will clear the rear sight.
Neither has come close to hitting my face.

When you order your Chapuis be sure and specify you want the rib precut for scope mounts.
They also have a claw mount option but I have not seen one on a 9,3.

A scoped 9,3x74R double is one fine hunting gun.
