gonna have fun-Ruger m-77 in .458 Lott
      #61990 - 01/09/06 04:36 PM

First off, I've been gone a while, and have not posted for some good time now, because of a death in the family, and to be honest, it has had me in a daze for quite some time now, but good news is, I'm getting back to my old self now.

And in doing so, I just went today and placed the order for the new Ruger. Came out a tad over $1600.
I figure this one will be a good project as I work up some loads for it.
I'll strictly handload these, as I do my .450-3 1/4" N.E., because the prices on even the factory Hornady ammo is steep, compared to brass and woodleighs.

Should turn out to be a pretty good all-rounder gun for me, loading up or down, and I'm even thinking of working up some of what I like to call modern "tropical loads".

But to make this interesting, and to have at least one point to the post here---does anyone have a Ruger like this, and how do you like it?
Also, lets hear some load data.
Right now, since I've just been shooting the .450 N.E., all I have for powder is the slow burning variety-like rl-15, 4831, etc.
Got some 4198 handy.
And I might be able to scrape some 3031 together. And some miltary flake powder from 8mm mauser bullet pulls(thatwould be neat-if I actually knew it's burn rate-but I don't-so I guess it will just have to sit there-too chancy).

Anyway, I wanted to say "I'm back", and get some chat about the Lott started.
And this Ruger.
Should be getting it beginning of next week, so I'm in high spirits.
I'm thinking it will be a good work gun for culling wild hogs down here with lighter loads.

OH-what is that ".458 Express" I've heard of. It's supposed to have a 3" case. Same as the Lott, but at 3".
Anyway,
I'm back with a vengeance.

Walksfar
Sorry for your loss.

Glad you are back

Since yu already have a 450 3 1/4" [what kind], then you already know about the many choices of .458 bullets.

For low cost plinking bullets the Remington 405 gr are hard to beat. I have not loaded for the 458 Lott, but I have had 2 458 Wins and I used IMR 3031.
I also use 3031 in my 450 No2 double for 350 gr Hornadays.

Have fun with your new rifle.

walksfar,

Glad to see you getting back to yourself. I have a ruger #1 in 458 lott and a ruger m77 in 458 lott. I have not shot them tons but they are both good shooters. The #1 weighs in at 9 lbs-2 oz, and the m77 weighs in at 9 lbs-9 oz. Not a lot of difference in weight but I think the recoil felt is a lot different. The # 1 kicks a lot more than the m77 does, at least in my opinion. I really like both guns though.

Thank's all.
Sorry for the late reply, as work had me taxed for time on the net.

NE450no.2---right now the only .450 I have is a simple, but sturdy Ruger no.1 that's been re-chambered---guess it's your basic do-it-yourself Nitro.
Shoots pretty good though.
The double Rigby .450 I "had" is now in my nephew's safe, and is not being fired anymore. I do not have a safe, and have had a hard time finding hiding places. Unless I dig a hole in the ground in the back yard.
But, I'm getting a safe pretty soon, so it may be returning home soon, although I will not be firing it anymore. I've pretty much returned to basics with my rifles now, and am going to be carrying things like this Ruger. It's basic, it duplicates the ballistics easy, and I won't mind if it gets scratched, because the last barb-wire fence I went through with the double almost gave me a heart failure.
I figure I can do anything with the Lott that can be done with the .450 and more. It's got two more rounds ready to go in a pinch.
But I'm still gonna hold two more twixt my fingers, because of habit.
I've been reading through some post's on Accurate Reloading, and figure with the RL-15, about 84 grns. with the 500 Woodleighs.
Actually, I don't NEED that much-as 80 grns should put me at about 2150fps, and that's all I really wanted to do, was duplicate the velocity of the .450 and .470
I'm not much into all of the hype about higher velocity. I've seen the originals at work, and that's all that is needed.
Time tested, so to speak.

Got it figured out I think, but I'll post a pic of that rifle when it gets here.
Labor Day, and the weekend holdover, put a hold on it getting here, and I'm about to climb the walls as it is, with anxiety.
But anyway. I'll make it.

p.s.-I found out, that 3" case was the Express .458 and all that came about because of poor African powder selection.
Mag box is too short in the Ruger I bet. No need for it anyway.
3.8" ocl, or something to that effect.

BTW-I'm gonna put a silver's pad on this Ruger, because it's just got to have a red pad, no other way for me-hehe
Just not right without it.
And I hear the Ruger pads are junk.

Also, it's only been a short time since I learned to load for those .450's. I had, beforehand, been using some Kynoch's that I bought in the late 70's. I only would use about two or three a year, tops.
Then with the book of Wrights, I have it down pat now with the loading.
I still have some of those Kynoch's, but I don't have any in 450-no.2 or I'd send you some, NE450no.2.
I always did think that was a "looker" for a cartridge.
But, I'd love to have a .475no.2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
An original that is.
But don't get me wrong, I'd take a Searcy if he had that caliber.
I'm rambling, and I'd better get to bed-it's too late.
I've got to take a cow and calf to the sale tomorrow to pay for that Ruger.eecchh!!

Gentlemen,

I n reading your post so far it seems to me that both of you have quite a bit of experience with big bore rifles. I have a #1 450/400 on order but I can't really say what I will use it forin the western U.S.. My question to you is is there any real practical use for these rifles on this side of the pond? I will have mine in camp on summer scouting trips in Grizzly country, available for 4 and 2 legged intruders, but most of the hunting applications I put a rifle to use for out here are 200+ yard shooting and I can't think of any reason to try this with the big bores. Any thoughts?

Good luck with your new no.1 in 450/400!
I must tell you, that caliber was once(before the .375h@h came about), THE all-round caliber for Africa.
Now, that does not mean it is ONLY for Africa.
That would be an outstanding cartridge for Grizzly, and anything else in America-except small species like goats and small deer-but hey, this is an insignificant issue, because I've seen 22-250's tear up more meat on a deer than a .375. One has to wonder, where people get the idea that faster is always better.
I think NE450no.2 hunts wild hogs with his double, and comes out clean I imagine; so no, there is absolutely nothing wrong with your 450/400 here in America, and I figure, that is how Ruger is planning it too. I'll be hunting hogs with my Lott also.
And I think you will find that most of the dangerous game rifles that exist today, are used more on tamer species than anything else, simply as a matter of interest on the part of the owner, skill building, and mostly just feasibility, as not everyone can afford a trip all the time. It helps doing this, after all, because it may have to be taken against something meaner in the future, and anyway, it's just plain fun, and a lot more enjoyable that using new-fangled ammo and guns.
I used my .450 3 1/4" on hogs for a short time, with "light-cordite" loads with lighter bullets. Same thing I'm going to do with the Lott.
I would not hesitate to use it for Grizzly at all, in fact it is spot-on for that work-with full-power loads.
Although, and I must say this, you may be hampered by the single-shot capability, in a tight spot. BUT, hopefully that will never come about.
Study the ballistics, and drop in bullet at about 150-200 yds.
This will get stuck in your head. Closer than that you should be spot on. Thats just at the top of my head-so don't take it as gospel-I don't remember the ballistics.
I'd use it for all big-game here in America, regardless of anyone elses opinion. It is an excellent caliber.
In a single shot, with a close shot(50-75yds) at ol-Griz, be sure you have a man with a back-up rifle-they can close distance faster than they look on tv.
For all other game here it's fine as is.
FINE cartridge. With the right bullet it will take anything in America-and you can load it accordingly(you will be hand-loading, as I imagine the factory ammo (hornady?) is going to be pretty expensive), since it's a single shot-unlike a double, which would have to regulate with a certain load.
It only faded somewhat with the advent of the .375h@h.
There are no flies on it-it was just asleep for a little while.
I'd love to have a double in this chambering for big bears. But I might have to settle for one of those no.1's myself.
Good luck!

p.s.-
I am surprised to see this one from Ruger offered so soon. I thought it would be a couple years if at all.
In any case, you can't go wrong with the cartridge.

Anyway, yes, I recieved the Lott today, and am giving it a no.-7 or 8 on the scale of what I was anticipating.
The bolt on my m-48 mauser is smoother, and this one will have to be worked on.
The wood is good, but not excellent.
It looks like, I guess, what I paid for it, but no more.
Fine for going through thick brush, and not worrying about it.
I guess, it's the best a basic-factory rifle can achieve.
I figure it's no need in posting a pic of it-it's not THAT impressive.

The bolt could be a tad longer-with checkering so it won't slip, and the whole thing is muzzle-heavy, even in .458.
Will have to add weight to the butt just to counter-balance.
I can only imagine what the .375's feel like toward the muzzle.!!!

But for the work I want it to do-it's just right.
No frills, just a hard working gun.

I have a Ruger RSM in 458 Lott. I like it a lot (no pun intended) I had some trigger work done and a "real" recoil pad put on. And a mercury recoil reducer added in the butt stock.

My 500 gr. bullet load is

Fed. 215 primer
Hornady brass
Hornady or Woodleigh bullets (slightly different velocity and
impact points)
83 gr. IMR 4320

2248 FPS Hornady and I can't remember the Woodleigh speed, but it's a little bit faster.

The only constant is change.

Enjoy the 458 Lott.

I am loading Varget for the 500 gr Woodleighs (soft/solid) around 2100fps. I am using RL7 for the 350 Hornady soft points for practice around 1900 fps. Point of impact off about 1 inch at 100 yds.
