I've been looking for a good quality classic 9,3x62mm rifle for some time.
Limited choices available in Australia new (CZ550, Sako 75, Heym... but all on special order only at $A2000+)
Been offered a Huqvarna 640 at a very good price, but I'm wondering if they are a good choice?
Seems to be a late model one, excellent bore and blueing, will have to check whether it has the modifiied or standard Mauser flag safety, and has a chequered beechwood stock, but barrel mounted swivels.
No charger cutout on the LHS of the action... were these built on modified FN actions?
Anything in a Husky to lookout for?
Or should I just keep looking for a Brno ZG47 or an orginal Oberndorf Mauser

I have a Husky in 9.3x62 on its way from NZ. It should be here this week but I am not holding my breath. It is built on a FN and started out as a 9.3x57. It has a set of RECKNAGEL QD mounts fitted ready for a S&B 4# scope. It looks good so far. I will let you now what its like as soon as I get it. ozhunter

TilleyMan, http://www.pettsons.net/m640.html Has the action a large front ring? If s, yours is most likely a built on a FN action. Make sure it's not built on built a Swedish m/38 action-this action is absolutely nothing to write home about, check the link and you will see why http://www.pettsons.net/m46.html How much does a Husqvarna cost in your part of the globe?
Cheers Johan

Yes, it is almost identical to the rifle in the first link, so not built on the earlier Mauser action.
It has barrel mounted swivel, no cut out on the LHS of the receiver... not sure about whether it has the modified flag safety. I think they were the last of the 640 series and had the swivels mounted in the stock.
Husky 640's seem to go for $A750-$1200 depending on condition and calibre in Australia... when you can find them!
Pretty much ANYTHING in 9,3x62 is rare in Australia...
Ozhunter Yes, seen a few interesting rifles advertised in NZ too, but what has always stopped me is the cost and time involved in getting it through all the red tape!
Did you use a freight forwarder and customs agent? How was the process and what were the costs involved?
Cheers

The 640 is another version of the 648 in 8x57Is ,that i have . They are FN 98 receivers and they are very fine rifles . They can be difficult to get,but they are fine to custom make a rilfe out of. The most expensive i have seen cost nearly 15000 dollar and it had all trix and trades of the gunsmith in it.
In short. they are superb rifles and the 9,3x62 is a superb rifle and after the information i got is that they wasnt made in so many numbers, so if you have the chance to get one ,buy it!! And use it for all hunting and shooting .

The 640s had FN large ring actions and are excellent hunting rifles. The stocks split at the tang almost always, however, but a bit of MicroBed will fix that.
My post of 05/04/06 in the Rifles section shows a similar rifle to the one you are considering. I absolutely love my three Husqvarnas...two are 640s (9,3X62 & 30-06) and one is on the HVA action (7X57 Akl. Imp).
