375H&H reamed to 375 ULTRA?? Opinions??
      #61804 - 28/08/06 06:30 AM

I have a Win 70 375H&H bolt that is not used due to another lighter 375 H&H I prefer..The Win 70 is a heavy gun with scope at around 10 pounds.

I am contemplating reaming the 375 H&H out to 375 Ultra and gaining amother 200 fps with a 300grain bullet to 2700 with 20 grains more powder than an H&H. It will deliver 4850 fpe and only drop 23 inches at 400 yds with a 250 yd zero. This is a 5 inch gain over the 375 H&H at 400 yds.The action is not Weatherby sized so the ultra line of cartriges is the max that will fit.

This will make it a long range elk/moose gun(2350 fpds at 400 yds) as well as decent Big Bear medicine shooting 300gr Swift A Frame bullets.

Opinions? I have several 300's,a 338Wm and 416 Rem as well. Ream it to 375 Ultra or just sell it??

If you decide to sell it you shuldn't have much problem
as everyone seems to want Winchesters.

I would sell it - unless you do a lot of long range
hunting like you described.

If it were my rifle and I already had another H&H that I used/liked more I would either sell it or rechamber to 375 Weatherby. That would give you an excellent long range elk/moose gun and you could still shoot H&H ammo out of it in a pinch.

I have an FN action early Sako that was taken from 375H&H to Wby, and I love the gun. It would be a much better choice than the UM, I feel. It sure is nice to know that I can use H&H ammo in a pinch, and I do like that extra bit of velocity for elk hunting at somewhat longer ranges.

Sell me the Winjammer and solve your problem...

I have a custom Brno 602 chambered for the .375 Ultra. I chose the chambering so that I could achieve .375 H&H long barrel velocities from a short barrel, and in this I prevailed. However, I was made aware of another fellow who cut down his Brno 602 .375 H&H with a loss of only 40 FPS. That said, it is clear that the additional 50 FPS I gained does not justify the additional cost of powder and brass.

While I am quite happy with my rifle, I would be very surprised if you actually realized a 200 FPS advantage over the H&H. If you want a high speed .375 perhaps you are a candidate for a .378 Weatherby. I also considered this cartridge and rejected it due to the cost of brass. I had a .416 Rigby which proved expensive to feed, so I did not wish to repeat that situation

Boomer,

May I ask your barrel length, bullet weight, and load specifics for your 375 ultra?

The Win barrel is 24" on the 375, what was your barrel length?

My rifle is a custom Brno 602, and the barrel is a 21 inch Smith with standard for caliber 1:12 twist. The purpose of the .375 Ultra chambering was so that I could duplicate .375 H&H long barrel velocities - which I did with a bit to spare.

I have loaded bullet weights from 260 gr to 380 andI have found that H-4350 gives me good results across the board. When loading the 260 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip, I reduce the load significantly to reduce bullet blow up, and 2600 fps still shoots flat enough for my purposes.

Barnes 270 gr XLC - 95.0 grs H-4350 - 2800 FPS
Barnes 300 gr X - 90.0 grs H-4350 - 2600 FPS
Barnes 300 gr TSX - 90.0 grs H-4350 not chronographed

Hornady 270 gr Interlok - 95 grs H-4350 - 2800 FPS
Hornady 300 gr FMJ - 90 grs H-4350 - 2600 FPS

Nosler 260 gr. - 90.0 grs H-4350 - 2600 FPS
Nosler 260 gr - 95.0 grs H-4350 - 2900 FPS

PMP 286 gr Mono-Solid - 92.0 grs H-4350 - 2750 FPS

Rhino 380 gr Bonded - 84.0 grs H-4350 - 2300 FPS

Speer 285 gr. AGS - 92 grs H-4350 - 2750 FPS

I rounded off the velocities to the closest 50 FPS, and velocities were measured over a Ohler 35P chronograph at 12'. When I was working up my loads, I would stop when I got high pressure signs and back off 1.0 gr. I often found that by reducing 2.0 grs, pressure would drop significantly, but that velocity would not - therefore most loads are 2.0 grs below what was maximum for my rifle.

PLEASE NOTE - the loads in my rifle EXCEED THE MAXIMUM loads listed in the Hornady Manual!

Sell the 375 H&H!! Most of us mere mortals can NOT shoot well enogh at 400 yards to take advantage of the 5" difference in drop. My guess is that 10 years from now there won't be any 375 Ultra ammo available.

Perhaps you are correct as new cartridges are being brought out all the time. I see Hornady has a new .375 in the wings which looks pretty good. By the time 10 years has passed, even if Remington decides to discontinue the .375 Ultra, it is unlikely that the other cartridges based on this case will also dropped - therefore a brass supply will continue to exist for quite some time. After all, we can still buy brass for the .348 Winchestrer and the .350 Remington.

I want to thank hoppdoc for the good price he is affording me for the Win 70 SS/SYN 375 H&H. It is going to a good home...MINE!

Thanks, again, DOC...

Seems like someone is on a buying spree. Everyone had better buy some guns before L2S gets them all.

I had an extra Ruger 375 rechambered in 375 Ultra a few years ago and it was straightforward as the reamer goes but you have to have the rails worked on because of the fatter cartridge. The only thing missing is a fat and concave bottom for added cartridge capacity. Recoil is a bit fast, almost approaching the Rigby's. The only reason I did it was I was thoroughly impressed with Jon Sundra's wildcatting the then new 300 Ultra to 375 quite a few years back. JS devoted an entire chapter in using it for an African hunt.
