DR--WORKING GUN OR WORK OF ART??
      #61774 - 27/08/06 06:53 PM

Reflections and personal insight---

So what exactly makes the DR so great? After all it is just a gun or is it? Could it be the game you hunt with a Double?? Does dangerous game hunting set hunters apart? You betcha--

The DR is critisized by so many unknowledgible hunters on many points but never as works orf art!!

The neat thing about Doubles is that you can get a basic one one which you can hunt with and enjoyas a Dangerous game hunting tool or you can have so much more!!

Granted the Double is quite specialized and almost prohibitedly expensive at the entry level for the average hunter. The average hunter cannot afford to hunt the dangerous game that it is best suited for much less even fly to Africa. The average hunter may eventually spend $1500 for a top end bolt and that and have an Alaskan Hunt be the ultimate hunt for him.But the average hunter would never consider hunting DANGEROUS GAME or would he?

I think that Doubles could even evolve into 2 catagories. One would be a 470 or 500 class Alaskan Big Bear gun for the environment of Alaska with stainless steel, syntheic stock
and other modifications and the other would be the BEST QUALITY English Double we know today. Strange but I want both!!

What is the difference between the basic working Double
(I assume most would agree it would be a Merkel and extend up to Heym/Searcy etc. with auto ejectors etc.) and the WORK of ART Double??

The answer? Maybe it is when you start adding features to you gun that don't improve its basic function but only its appearance---

Gentlemen--what $$ and exact custom features start creating a work of art? What do these entry "works of art" rifles cost by current manufacturors or does history suggest it starts and ends at an ENGLISH DOUBLE, best quality ???

Pardon me for my rambling-
Thanks to everyone for their thoughts-it is much appreciated.

To me, anyway, a double rifle is a great tool. And the rifle in and of itself is a wonder to behold when you consider its mchanics.

But any rifle is a tool. It is a tool that furthers an "art". The rifle is the brush and the hunt is the canvas. The real art is how one uses that brush against the canvas, to finally step back looking at the result, and thanking God for the opportunity and the grace to take one of his wonderful creatures in the neverending cycle of life, in a cathedral we call the outdoors.

There are some beautiful rifles out there, but most will seldom see the outside of a safe. Hunting is the art, and there are many among us that can create a Rembrandt with second hand paint brushes.

A DR means I dare to get closer than with a bolt gun. But considering th cost of a DR, it should look nice too.

Grizz,

Good analogy.

When I see a fine DR I find it amazing that man can create such a beautiful piece of functional art and that you and I have the ability to actually own something so sublime and use it in the field. I mean really, what other tool would you really stake your life on that uses technology that is hundreds of years old and can be 100+ years old itself?

So are DR's tools or are they art??? They are both.

In the sittuation where the S/S Nitro Express double rifle is needed, there is no tool better suited to the task! When we look at, and handle a fine S/S double rifle, that was made properly to fit and finish, and ballance, then, in my eyes, there is no tool that is more beautiful! IMO, they are both!

A double is both, as Mac stated. A plain Double by a quality maker will be the best tool that you can use for it's intended purpose. It will shoot to point of aim, function flawlessly, balance perfectly, fit purposefully and respond like the your old 17 year old girl friend.

If a rifle is beautifully done, intricately engraved, with gold accents, special innovations and beautiful wood it will do everything just as well as it's plain cousin. It will look much prettier but will also function as well.

All Doubles are made to, first be useful tools and second to be aesthetically pleasing.
