Scout scope on BigBore
      #61590 - 23/08/06 09:36 AM

Hey Guys,
I'm in the process of building a Ruger No 1 in 470 Nitro.
My eye sight is not the greatest so figured that I could fit a nice quarter rib with single express leaf but machine the rib to accept quick detachable rings with a Scout scope up front. Nice long eye relief to avoid Nitro eyebrow and still retain the classic looks & back up of the express sight as well.
Bad idea???

Make it light. Heavy steel rings might cause a failure of the soldered connections. Cool idea though.

It takes me too long to use iron sights, so I put a Aimpoint red dot scope on my 458 Lott with removable rings. I had no problem with it on 14 day safari in Tanzania last year. The scope is tough and very quick to put on target. Only thing is you need to remember to turn it on.

I have a mean little number, a 338 Wm Ruger all weather rifle rebarreled and redone for 458 Wm by Labounty. This makes it a great bear gun at a light weight but the recoil is memorable. I am considering a red dot mounted further out as it will be a stand gun over bait. This will allow me to shoot with both eyes open and see better at dusk than a peep or iron sites.

I hope the red dot holds up!!

LuikenNZ,

I have a 2X extended eye relief leoupold scope forward mounted on my 585 wells magnum. I use warne rings and it holds up very well. Of coarse, you have a smaller field of view but heavy recoil won't give you that "scoped eye brow". I have gotten very comfterable shooting it.

I had a Ruger #1 in .416 Rigby. I was unhappy with the factory sights, and the factory quarter rib positioned the scope too far back for me. My solution was to send the rifle to a gunsmith who made up a custom quarter rib inletted for Talley QD rings, and positioned so the ocular lens of the Leupold 1.5-5X was in line with the forward edge of the falling block. Thus positioned, I could use the scope up to 3X, there was no chance of getting hit, and there was nothing in the way of the loading port.

I think your idea of the medium eye relief scope is a good one. My .375 wears a Burris Scout Scope, and I am very happy with the arrangement. I would use a steel mount screwed to the barrel - most big bore Ruger barrels have lots of meat, and this could be augmented with some bedding compound or silver solder.

It appears that eye dominance could
be a problem with the scout setup.
Is it to be fired with both eyes open?
