How do you carry your extra ammo for the 2nd shot?
      #6142 - 26/12/03 05:19 AM

Not that we need a second shot, and all, being one shot-one kill kind of guys. However, just in case, I've been experimenting with the Robert Redford in "Out of Africa" holding a round between your fingers in your trigger hand and it ain't as easy as it looks. Of course, you can have the cartridges in a belt carrier or on the butt of the rifle in a carrier, and I'm told there is a wrist carrier but I haven't seen one yet? Any other preferred and/or tried and true techniques out there?

I carry my spare ammo in an MTM wallet that holds ten of the torpedos. This is usually in a small backpack or waist pouch.

I also keep two rounds in loops that I sew to my suspenders which are readily accessible. When I prepare to fire, I remove the two cartridges and place them between my offhand fingers. I always wear deerskin gloves and these give me a pretty good grip on them.

Upon discharge, my right hand cycles the action and then the same hand reaches under and grabs a cartridge for chambering.

With practice, one can make a single shot sing 'n dance!

One round in off hand held bullet towards thumb. Been my experience that a round sticking out between fingers gets snagged and ripped from your hand going through brush. I use the off hand to hold the gun,and the strong to load. Open the offhand while holding the gun enough to take the round and load.

5 rounds in belt loop carrier worn in front of my body towards or next to the belt buckle. Accessable with strong or weak hand.

I like to wear a hunting vest that has big waist line pockets. Each pocket will have one lose round in it. Two will clink.

I also will have one loose round in every open trouser pocket. Ever tried to dig a round out of a front pocket from sitting or prone?

Carrying that many rounds of Westley Richards No.2 Musket or 577/450 Martini I also make sure I stay away from deep water.

If you use one of those wrist or stock carriers. Practice shooting with them from the opposite side of the rifle. The stock carriers hurt. The wrist carriers require practice, but then it all requires practice.

For carry, I use a leather buttstock carrier. It has loops on the offside and, I believe, holds 7 cartridges. I also wear a culling belt which holds a bunch more.

I've practiced reloading both ways - holding spare rounds in my fingers, as well as just trying to prefect a "rapid reload" technique that has me pulling the next cartridge from the carrier with my right hand as soon as the ejector has propelled the spent case from the chamber.

I got a 5 bullets case but usually I only need one while hunting Mountain Goats or Roe Deers .

I'm thinking a leather/knit combination band that would be worn midway up the off hand arm... but the angles would be all wrong for quick extraction.... Holmes has a great idea, except for the fact that most (all) of us aren't quite as at peace with our inner redneck to hunt africa in overalls! :D:D (hey, my wife would be up for it anyday... me on the other hand..... not likely!)

the other thing I'd thought of is just a modified "change pocket" in your shooting britches... basically sew one or two partitions (depending on your girth and therefore the size of the pocket) and just house the rounds nose-down. I line up 6 20ga. shells accross the top of my trigger-hand jeans pocket when I shoot trap and they are way cake to grab (the rim holds them up so no fishing is necessary)... it works especially well when you are shooting doubles and can grab two shells in one fell swipe... that's been a very effective method for me...

although, on a #1, without the action break, the angles are a little different, but I know that without really working at it I can reload both barrels of the Ithica (o/u) in under 2 seconds... with only one round and a quicker "open" stroke, 1 second flat should be do-able.

Try practicing with a big fuzzy athletic wrist band. See how that works for holding a shell or 2.

What ever method you use to carry spare ammo make sure you try it shooting and loading from the right side and the left side of the rifle. I got a black eye from a friends 30-06 butt stock holder shot left handed.

Same thing with the wrist holder. Practice with it from both sides.

I shoot from either side of the rifle as the shot presents itself. I won't pass a good shot because its on the other side of the rifle.

Those would be $200 wool Filsons, son! Not exactly your run-o-the-mill redneck bibs! Actually, according to Jeff Foxworthy, I just may be a redneck...

And, being a tall skinny feller, I generally wear 'spenders in the field so my britches don't fall down around my knees just when I'm ready to cap the big one Gotta keep up appearances, eh?!

Seriously, the bibs are my winter wear. Gets cold in Wyoming. In the summer, I use a vest that has numerous pockets, several of which hold large cartridges like they were made for it. I don't know if these are photo vests or what. I pick them up at surplus stores. The vests are inexpensive (imported), so when I damage one in the scrub I'm only out $30-35.

One of the most interesting big bore carriers I've ever seen was worn by an old boy who was a mountain man nut. His carrier was a split leather 'necklace' about 2" wide and hung around his neck almost like a scarf. It held 5 or 6 rounds (45-90s), right at his upper chest. An interesting concept.

wow, 45-90 is not one I've seen in person. we used to have an 1876 mint 45-75 and that thing was enough to scare the crap out of me... I took the cowards way out of that offer... you couldn't get me to pull that trigger for $50! for an even $100, maybe, but definitely not for less!

I just carry my .470s in a nylon stretch belt that I made, that is sewed closed at the bottom and encases the whole round..They don't stick in nylon and come out easy without lifting the belt..the also don't leave a coat of vertigre on the case if left in the belt for long periods of time..I will take any big bore caliber from 375 on up to 600....works for me.

I'm not to hot on the finger carry in a tight spot, its a bunch of nonsense IMO...I want my hands free..

Don't believe I'd recommend it in a tight spot either. But Ray, its not all dangerous game out there

When I complete a stalk on a muley and I'm ready to take a shot, holdin' the extras in my fingers is pretty handy.

And when a jackrabbit breaks out from beneath my feet, I automatically stuff a couple of rounds 'tween the fingers while I wait for a stop 'n shot.

Of course, if he charges me, I may be in trouble

I've come up with the best way to carry a second shot. It is a European invention that allows for the attaching of a second barrel to the single shot rifle.

Here's a pic.

Holmes,
I agree completely, I just was under the impression everyone was talking DGSSR,s and the two finger mean reload the Redford got from some expert...

I'd bet that I can take a round out of my belt and reload about as fast as holding one in my hand and if its rabbits or mule deer, then who cares....Besides the purpose of a SS is to not have to fire a second shot and to make the first one count!! at least thats what I read here!

There aren't many animals in this state (at least not ones you can hunt) that would still be standing if you whacked them with even a 375... might not kill them but surely but them on their ass!

I have a wrist carrier. Made by taking a band of neoprene like material with the ends sewn together. Then 6 holes were punched in 3 pairs so that the cartridges when inserted through both holes are held perpendicular (roughly) to the line of the forearm and across the back of the wrist (where most people wear a watch). Right handed, I feel it is easier to open the action and reload with the right hand while holding the rifle by the forearm with the left hand.

I've tried the rounds between the fingers but it isn't as fast. Fast, however, isn't something I've found necessary to worry about. Since game has yet to organize a human wave attack on my stand, I've not had to worry about rate of fire.

I do often carry another 10 rounds in one of those folding wallets on my belt. Unless I'm hunting groundhogs or other vermin, I've yet found it necessary to dig into it.

Do you have a single shot for the .375 2½"?

Yes it is. Those little black dots are the firing pins. It is an 8 bore Rifle.

Yeah, we weren't too specific about the quarry. Even for non-dangerous game, cartridges between the fingers is really only applicable under casual circumstances. Snow on the ground while rabbit hunting certainly complicates things when you drop one! Hard to watch the bunny and dig for your cartridge at the same time...

Don't believe I'll take that bet, Ray! I'm a poor loser

Well, I... uhh... hmmm... damn... I've no witty comeback to that one

Take care, Ray.

You are such a shit

And keep those damn pics off this forum... everyone KNOWS that SS rifles are the purest form of riflemanship .... even if we don't know how to carry our spares

Lookin' down those big tubes is sorta intimidating!!
