I agree, I would take both but carry the Double until the bolt was needed.

Yup, that 100 year old big bore killing machine may keep your backside out of the dirt if that "oh Sh*t" moment ever does occur. Carrying only a $1500 bolt may not get that done.

No Double in DG country? How much is your life worth??

I was refering to a DG hunt with the big bore double. For as little as $1500 you could take along a reliable bolt action .375 or .458.

Some day I will face this dilema. I have a big bore DR, a .375 DR and a .375 bolt rifle. My plan is to take the big bore DR and the bolt. If my brother comes along he can take the .375 DR

To answer your question, the 9.3x74R hands down.

Have only been to AFrica once, Botswana 1988. At the time I had two Rigby sidelock Best ejector doubles, a .350 No. 2 and a .460 G&A that had been made for Peterson the publisher, a wildcat .45 on the .500 3" case. Both open sights. I planned to take them but the outfitter said "Teddy Roosevelt has been dead a long time. Leave the doubles at home and bring a .375 with a scope and a lighter rifle." This was undoubtedly the correct advice for a first trip but I never went back and have always been sorry I didn't take the Rigbys.

I am back from my 3rd Safari to Zim.
I took the 450 No2 double, the 9,3x74R double [scoped], my 12x12x30-06 drilling and my 475 FA revolver.

My wife took the 450/400 3 1/4" double [scoped with a 1.1-4 S&B], a Blaser R 93 in 308, and her 12x12x30-06 drilling.

All guns performed perfectly.

Again I chose the 9,3 double over a 375 bolt rifle.

My choice has been a doble in 458 and a 375H&H bolt. This choice has worked very well. I might prefer a 375 double, but I don't own one so the issue is - currently - moot.

Vilignius, your Botswana outfitter was just plain wrong. If the light double was unscoped then perhaps the big double and a scoped 375H&H but no reason to leave the big double home. There is more and more demand for double rifles for many reasons, not the least of which is that they are excellent choices for DG and far and away the best choice for elephants. Teamed with a suitable scoped rifle or detatchable scope for the occasional longer shot, best option there is.
