Good question!

I'll check out the satellite imagery at work tomorrow and see how far up the mangroves come.

A lot of fresh-water would have gone down that river this year, probably pushed the muddies even further down than usual.

Sure, see the 'Marrakai with crabs' post halfway down this thread.

Muddies=mud crabs, 'cos they live in holes, in the mud around mangrove trees, in Northern Oz estuaries.

Somehow, when you said "Marrakai with crabs" I got a vastly different image in my head than what you really meant.

You have to remember that he lives in the Northern Territory
so anything is possible up there in the tropics !!!

Marrakai,
very nice catch of muddies, I guess that they are the largest specimens captured. I've had some tasty Blue Swimmers down here, but sure do miss the old muddy!

cheers

How does the taste of muddies compare to blue crabs?, and are muddies available in your restaurants?

I live at some of the best blue crab country in Aussie.
I much prefer the mud crab to the blue swimmer probably because I have access to the bluey's 12 months of the year.
Yes muddies are available in resteraunts, one very popular dish in the northern territory is chilli mud crab.
I will be up in the land of the big mud crabs in about 20 days time for about 6 weeks.

Marrakai did you get a chance to look at the satelite imagery to see where the mangroves start.
I will probably be around Paperbark Creek which runs into theVic.

Al:
From the imagery, it looks like there are still plenty of mangroves on the southern shore of Shoal Reach, out the front of Bullo River. Just upstream around the bend, also on the southern shore, Bull Creek, Boundary Creek, and Packsaddle Creek appear mangrove-fringed at their mouths. ....and that about pulls it up. That would be around 129 degrees 57.5 minutes East.

Might have to plan a field trip to collect some 'ground truth' data!
