600 OVERKILL COMING
      #60948 - 08/08/06 01:13 PM

I have finally been in touch with Ed over at AHR . He said my 600 ok should be done in 2 more weeks. I ordered it back in January, so I am looking forward to getting it and blowing something up with it ! Maybe ratteling my brains will get me back on track a little bit.

How, you really are a recoil junkie aren't you? Good Luck with it. I would be curious to know how it compares to you 700 NE. Brake or no brake? Any other info on it?

Hi Ken

That is good news, hope you are able to get some photos posted along the way of targets and load info and of your .700 in use also, you have some serious heay weight pieces there, how do you improve on that?

bulldog,

I have a break that is removable. It has a 28" bl and two mercury tubes in the stock. The weight will be about 14 1/2 lbs. I know this is heavy but my 585 wells weighs 14.25 lbs. The 600 comes with AA wood, I did not upgrade from that. It has a drop box feed. Tom (safari-kid) has one with a 20" bl and fancier wood than mine. I am on a tighter budget than he is. Toms was just finished and mine is to be done before the end of the month. I will try to post some pics. when I get it. The rifle also has an ebony tip forearm.

It will be interesting to hear about the recoil difference with and without the brake.

I have Ed loading me some ammunition with 165 grains, this should get 2200fps with a 900 grain bullet. The other load is with 173 grains, and should get a little over 2400 fps. with a 900 grain bullet. It should prove interesting to shoot.

Just reading that will mean I go to bed early tonight

Very interesting!!

What does the recoil calculate out to?

By my calculations--something like 180 ft pnds in a 15 pound gun!! I would hate to have a double fire in that rifle.

Yeowwsers!! That is beyond anything I want to shoot!!

Think I will stay with 470's and 500's. Dead is Dead!!

Any news on when Mr. Horneber will finish the next batch of .600 OK brass?

hopdoc,
The recoil will be alot, but the muzzle break is " sopposed to" reduce recoil by close to 50%. But.... you know I will have to shoot it without the break a few times anyway. Ed says the biggest problem people have with the hot load is the rifle torquing out of your hands because of the rotational force of the 900 grain bullet. I do not know when more of the brass will be coming in. Ed had enough brass in stock to load up 80 rounds for me.

Well, my 600 Overkill came in last week, but the ammo hasn't arrived yet. A couple of more weeks on it. I like the rifle but I was wanting to shoot full house loads at 2400ft/sec. The gun was supposed to weigh about 14.5 to 15 lbs, but it came in at 12.3 lbs. Ed asked me to shoot it and see what I think. He has offered to add 2 or 3 lbs to it if I want him to. So right now I am waiting on ammo to see if I can handle it at 12.3 lbs we will see.

bonanza

What type of 50 was it? I have a Barret m82 that I have been shooting since 1996. I don't shoot it as much as I used too.

The gun does have the removable brake. If this reduces felt recoil by approximatly 40%, it would bring down recoil from 216 ft. lbs, (which is more than I want) to around 135 ft. lbs with 2400ft/sec loads. I can handle 135 ft. lbs of recoil. My 585 wells gives off about 145 -150 ft. lbs of recoil and I have been shooting it for quite awhile. The 700 nitro with regulated loads of 160 grains of RL15 put a 1000 grain bullet at 2000 ft/sec . But since the gun weighs 17 lbs. it has about 125 ft. lbs of recoil. We will see what it shoots like when I get the ammo. I just can't handle 300 ft. lbs of recoil like Robgunbuilder can and be able to shoot well with that kind of recoil. We all have our limits.
