Pressure and Building
      #60876 - 06/08/06 07:16 AM

Hello All,

It’s been a little while since I posted. I have been quite busy with the now 3 ½ month old son. However I have been getting time to build some homemade DR’s again since I sold off much of what I got built before. I also managed to buy the Rigby 350 #2. It is currently getting annealed so can have the pitting worked at and the gun re-engraved. Anyway that is a topic with pictures of its own.

I’ve been reading everything on the board and a couple of things came up in different threads that got me thinking. I didn’t really want to hijack the other threads so thought I’d start a new one.

Pressure – In the topic of DR pressure we were talking about base crusher compared to peizo-electronic etc and how they compare with each other. Then reading peoples thoughts on pressure and opinions it got me wondering if we could arrange some tests of our own. I don’t know what the cost is or how difficult it would be to send the rounds to Birmingham proof house. However if we could get people to submit loads and maybe some original ammo then we could get the readings from the different measuring devices how they compare and make them available. My thought was that maybe we get people to submit them then we compile them. Those that paid to submit rounds or loads for testing get all of the data from the others freely. Then perhaps we take the rest and place it at one of the small on demand publishers for others that are interested in this data. The proceeds if any could go to help offset the cost of running these forums. Personally I’m interested in some rounds that aren’t NE rounds but you find in doubles such as the 9.3x74r for example you can get PSI fairly readily but its tough to get the base crusher readings anywhere.

Builds – As many of you know I’ve built most of the doubles I have. I was using homemade monoblocks almost exclusively. However I recently made a set of barrels in the shoe-lump configuration. I really like this method so far. Now in one thread it was talked about using different steel in this method to get better wear than barrel steel can provide. So I’m asking any of you what type of steel you feel would be best suited to this and what heat treatment you feel it should have. Currently I’m using pre-treated 4140 CM. Also wanted to ask those out there if they could tell me the strength differences in brass braze vs. silver braze. I used silver braze and an oven to set it for my set of shoe-lumps but noted on a couple guns that they used brass braze.

Bill
