Copper after lead?
      #60864 - 06/08/06 03:12 AM

I recall reading somewhere that shooting copper bullets after shooting lead will create barrel leading problems. Is this true? Should a barrel be cleaned between bullet types?

Thanks.

While some will tell you that the best way to clean out leading is to shoot a few copper jacketed bullets, you'll find that what usually occurs is that the jacketed slugs "smear" a lead plating about .0005 thick down the bore. This further worsens the leading problem when lead bullets are fired.
Clean the lead out......then shoot the copper.

Do it in a revolver and you stand a chance of splitting the forcing cone

I'm in agreement with SmokinJoe. Get the lead out before shooting jacketed bullets.

It also is wise to get all copper fouling out before shooting lead. The lead has an affinity for copper, so your lead fouling will be worse if copper is in your bore.
