ONE ACTION-3 CALIBERS, GOOD OR BAD IDEA???
      #60838 - 05/08/06 11:17 AM

I have been entertaining(daydreaming) about the idea of having one Double action but 3 sets of barrels, a heavy(500 NE class), a medium heavy(450/400 class) and maybe a shotgun barrel. Some forum members have discussed such combination Double rifles.

What would be the best action size similar ala Heym's different sized actions to fit all three sets of barrels? Would their largest also fit a set of 450/400 barrels and shotgun barrels as well.? Could you get the right fit?Any ideas what gauge shotgun barrels would be possible? 12 vs 20?

Is this idea too much of a compromise? Is there to much difference in the optimal action size for a 500 class vs a 450/400 class to make it balance and feel as it should?

Obviously there are vastly experienced members here who can suggest the pros and cons of such combo Double rifles.

Is this a dud idea? Thanks to all for any opinions given.

I know that you can get a Krieghoff double in calibres from 500 Nitro, down to 7x65, including 20 ga shotgun bbls.

The Chapuis can be had in 470 and 12 Ga.
The Chapuis is the only modern made double that can be had in 12 ga as far as I know.

Heym can be had in multiple calibres as well.

2 doubles, a Chapuis in 470 and 12 ga. And another in 9,3x74R and 30-06[for an American hunter], or 7x65 [for a European hunter] would be a hard combo to beat. You can also get 20 ga bbls for the 9,3 Chapuis... I wish I had a set for mine.

Thanks much--

A bit of an alternate thought would be a 450/400 recievercombo with alternate 9.3 x 74R as well as a 30.06 barrels and a shotty barrel to boot.

The 30.06 barrel(( 220 gr, 2300ft pnds energy) could be used with a detachible scope for plains game, the 9.3 cal( 286 grs, 3000+ ft pnds energy) carried as the all rounder and the 450/400 barrel(400 grs,4000+ ft pounds) when rooting about hunting the big dangerous nasties from lion to ele.

If those combo's would work---Sounds like fun!!

A 450/400, 9,3x74R, 30/06, 20 ga set would be a hard combo to beat for sure.

With a Krieghoff you could do a 500/416, with the other calibres listed.
There are no flies on the Kriehgoff.

What about including Pam Anderson to the set? I mean, talking about doubles...

looking at the Krieghoff site . 500-416, 8x75rs and 20 ga. is possible on the big 5 Classic. purely speculation on my part, as I've never handled one. Foxfire has posted that he has a multi-barrel setup. he seems to be very much in favor of his. Kurt.

Kweber,
I love my set up. Krieghoff built the gun starting with a Big five Classic action 470 NE, then added the 9.3x74R barrels. The 7x65R barrels were added later. I believe the setup is like a skeetgun set, one receiver for 12, 20, 28, and 410 gauge.
The 470 balances well and swings well. The 9.3x74R is a wounderful setup also shouldering and swinging well with a good balance point. The 7x65R much like a 410 setup is a little butt heavy or light in the muzzle. It's also a little heavy to carry around for deer size game but I love it anyway and will carry the extra wieght without complaint. They make a set of 20 gauge barrels. I don't know how they will balance or shoot but the moment I can convince my wife I have to have it for my birthday it's mine.
My double is also stocked left handed.

It is a very interesting concept! One gun for all hunting..

I've got a Merkel .470 and I'm thinking of getting a second barrelset: 9,3x74R seems as the best choice, however 8x57JR should work just fine and be better suited to Norwegian hunting.

Has anyone here added barrels to a Merkel before?

What about the calibers of choice? The 8mm should be good enough for plainsgame I suppose? The whole idea about this is to travel to Africa with a leather-case, not a big bulky box...

What about wear and tear?? I have an idea that it might not be a good idea to fit two-three different barrelsets to the same action. On the Merkel they come very thight from the factory, maybe too tight..? what will happen when a second or third barrelset get fitted, and you keep changing lot? PS. I don't shoot hundreds of animals every year, but I do like to practise and become familiar with my rifles.. I'd probably not wear down my double anyway, but nice to know what to expect.
