Anyone try the CZ 404 Jeffery?
      #60786 - 04/08/06 06:41 AM

I was wondering if anyone has experianced the CZ in .404 Jeffery and what are your thoughts? Is there any difference from their other 550 big bores? Is it worth the prem price they ask for it? Any other comments would be welcome..

Thanks...

This exact question came up on Accuratereloading and I posted this same input.

I wanted one, looked for 3 or 4 months to find a dealer that would even say they could get one.

I then waited about 2 months for the rifle. It was very rough. I could not manipulate the safety without great effort. To switch the safety, I had to push so hard I thought I tore the skin on my thumb. The finish on the metal was very rough and pebbley and the rifle had a big scratch on the barrel.
Overall very poor fit and finish. The rifle felt like a 2x4, but it pointed well and set up nicely for me.

Very poor fit and finish. I asked the shop to return it to CZ to repair the problems. CZ said they would not, because they had many people waiting for the rifle.

I usually am very pleased with out of the box CZs, when price is taken into consideration, they put out a good product. Not so with the 404.

I think if you want this caliber, you should resign yourself to the fact that you will have to spend more than $2300 to get a good rifle, or hunt ceaselessly for a bargain in another rifle in that price area.

I'm quite a fan of Sabi Rifles in Nelapruit RSA and it might also be worth watching the exchange rates..... they'll custom make a rifle on a VZ24 action (including a .404) to your measurements for around R25K. Currently, that's about US$3K but if the Rand weakens it might get into the price bracket you (.404Jeffery) mention. - I've just bought one (pics elsewhere on this forum) and am pleased as punch with it.

Shakari,

Once again you are the voice of reason and thoughts to ponder. I was thinking a "brace" of rifles might be in order. 9.3X62 and 404 Jeffrey.. I wonder if they can obtain CZ 602 or 550 actions?.. I really like the milled square bridge action to accept scope rings eliminating the need for bases.. Much cleaner lines and also practical IMHO.. And of course they would have to be in the old school style of the early Mauser/Brit guns..

I don't know for sure if they'll be able to source the actions - but my guess is that they would...... normally, I'd just call them and ask for you, but I go back to Tanzania on tuesday for 2 months and won't have time......sorry Bwana. - Guess you could e-mail them though.

BTW - that'd be a really cool combination of rifles.......
