VALUE OF 700 NITRO EXPRESS ?
      #60469 - 28/07/06 10:48 AM

I have a Searcy 700 and know what it is worth. There are 2 Wilkens 700 N. E. for sale by Gulf Breeze Firearms. They have been for sale for quite awhile. They are new. I would appreciate any knowledgable opinions on what you think either should sell for, assuming you liked the 700. They are both nice looking rifles, but I am unfamiliar with the Wilkens brand. thanks ...they are on GunsAmerica.com

They are fine guns. No longer made.

Here's the short story from another contributor:

"J&L Wilkins is a name formulated by two fellows, Chris Soyser originally from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Dick Correnti from So. California. They teamed up with Bob Harvey in England and also utilised several members of the Gunmakers Trade in England and actually produced 12-14 doubles and 20-30 fine Bolt rifles and a few shotguns. Trevor Proctor ( another noted gunmaker) in England also completed 3 of the Bolt rifles on 98 Mauser actions in 404 Jeffery and 416 Rigby.

On their doubles, they used some available English trade actions, one or two H&H extra (or at least appeared to be H&H type) forgings floating around in the trade at the time, and later actually designed actions for production in Austria that were forged there and along with barrels brought to Bob Harvey where he finished the guns along with members of the Trade.

Here is a list that Chris repeated from the top of his head regarding doubles: 2 sidelock 700H&H, 2 Boxlock 700H&H ( of which may be the two on Gulf Breeze Firearms ads on Guns America at $69M+ and $79M+) (also note another dealer had a sidelock 700 at the winter Beinfeld show in Vegas, $149M), 2-22LR one with a set of 410 shotgun bbls, 22 Hornet, 500 NE Boxlock, 577 sidelock, a 2 barrel set 375 and 470NE Sidelock and a pair of sidelocks one 470NE and the other a 30 Super said to have sold for over $100M."

In reply to:

ads on Guns America at $69M+ and $79M+

I dunno, bigdog: 69 million and 79 million seems like a bloody lot of US dollars for a couple of guns!

$69K and $79K maybe...

You guys must use different abbreviations from us down here.....

....or are they priced in Zim dollars?

K is common for ,000's but M is proper. ,000,000's would be MM.

They are asking 69,000 and 79,000 dollars for them. Does any body think they are worth that much ? They are fancier than my Searcy 700. I like the one with the elephant on it, which, of coarse, is the more expensive one. It is alot of $$ for one gun, but not as much as alot of fancier doubles.

If they were worth that much, someone would have bought them by now instead of letting them hang around and languish. However, it would cost more to replace them than those asking prices. If you really want one, make an offer, but keep in mind that a .700 NE is not easy to sell due to excessive recoil and weight.

Let us know what you decide.

Hi Ken

Hope you are felling a little better in yourself. I finally made it back from Corfu with day time temps of over 100 degrees, more than i am used to.

The Wilkins rifles were made under that name in the U.K trade for Chris soyser as has been said.

Trevor proctor, a good friend, did a small maount of the magazine rifles for them, mainly in .404.

Trevor is building my own .600 at present and if you check out the thread kindly posted for me by Mehul you will see pictures of progress to date.

A boxlock .700 made here is a rairity indeed, but I would hazard a guess that to do a similar one today on the same layout would require around £40,000 minimum worth of investement (app $73,000US)

Based upon that rationale the prices asked over with you are not all that unrealistic. however the real question is do potential buyers see that worth, if on one will pay such prices then they are indeed high. Prices for double rifles do seem to be on the up however. The .700 built for Mark sullivan by Michael Louca at Watson Bros was up fpr sale a while ago with a tag price of over $100,000, i do not know if it ever sold.

BW

Jonathan

Yep, still for sale;

I actually think it is quite a nice rifle but wouldn't buy it in that caliber even if I did have the money.

Given that the 700 NE caliber is the product of a rich guy who, in the 1980's really wanted a 600 NE built by H&H but was told NO, (as they had a contract with an earlier customer that he would have the FINAL 600 NE from H&H) this caliber lacks history as none of our icons used it.

I have never heard a claim that it does something the 600 NE can't.

If you want it because it's the biggest NE, then you'll need to sell when the 800, 900, 1000 NE's are built.

I personally fall for the 600, as it was made from the start as a smokeless cartridge, (unlike the 577, not to suggest the 577 is anything other than GREAT) it has wonderful history and character.

I wonder what they think it is worth. 300K seems pretty good to me.

I handled the H&H .700NE in Las Vegas several years ago. It was the centerpiece of their display at the Antique Arms Show. There was no price on the rifle, so I inquired. I was told that the rifle is not for sale as it is used for promotions, etc. Having gone that far, I then took the next step. I asked what it would cost to order one like it. The reply was, "Somewhat in excess of $250,000."

The US dollar has slid right far against the GBP since that day, so the cost today would be a good bit more.

At that time there were 10 .700NE Royals extant, with one in production.

So I am not surprised to hear that H&H turned down an offer of $300,000. They can't replace it for that amount, I would guess. If they intend to keep it, as I was told, they will have to brave some stout offers.

But what would one actually DO with such a behemoth, other than hurting yourself at US$100 per shot?

Stare at it and grope it, then repeat until you are blind and have bleeding fingers. If you had that much money who cares. Definitely a beautiful rifle.

I shoot my 700 Searcy, and it doesn't hurt me. I will agree that it is not the most practical gun in the world. But I always wanted one, just to have and shoot. At 16.8 lbs, it is only 3 lbs. heavier than a 577, I guess that would add up in a hurry if I were to haul it around all day. Alot of us buy guns that are not real practical. Thats how alot of pet projects get their start. I think that most of us will agree that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

500 grains,

I talked with Gulf Breeze and they came down about 10 grand off of the asking price on the more expensive one. I will have to pass on that, but I still really like the rifle.
