.577 twist rates?
      #60358 - 26/07/06 05:51 AM

Gents: I am looking for information on the barrel twist rates for the various .577 black powder express cartridges. Can anyone help?
Many thanks.

Bill:
The twist rate in my 'modern' Greener Empire .577 Light Nitro double is somewhere between 14 and 15 inches. I have no idea who made the barrels, but they stabilise jacketed 650-grainers at 1675 fps very well indeed.

I'll measure my 20-bore/.577 Express this weekend if I don't go bush. It will be a lot slower...

Fellas, I really appreciate your help. I am surprised at how fast the twists are. My reason for asking is that I am thinking of building a single-shot in one of the .577 BP calibers. If I use a Martini, I will of course be limited on case length. What got me interested in twist rates is that Pac-Nor offers a .577 barrel with a 1:18 twist, which I fear is too quick for soft lead and black powder. But perhaps not.
