Hello everybody,
finally have my Chapuis, shot it a few times & I am glad to report that I am firmly hooked!
I am thinking of going to Texas for the group hunt that is being organized over on the Accurate forums,I am in need of suggestions as to what rifle case would be suitable for transporting my rifle via air transport.

The Americase would be a good choice. They make a purpose built DR case.

Welcome Singh!

In addition to Americase (which are excellent) other top quality cases are Dan Walter and Bear Track. Dan Walter was bought by Dakota, which is now in Chapter 11. Don't know what the quality is like today, but I have one pre acquistion and it is top of the line.

Bear Track is associated with Freedom Arms. They look like tanks, and are tough.

If you are going to do a good bit of traveling and hunting, check out the Tuffpack. You will need a good rifle case to go into the Tuffpack, and for a doouble rifle you will have to have a mutton leg case. Roosevelt and Drake has some beautiful mutton leg caes for DR's in the US. If you are going to the fied, you will need to being a case anyway.

The Grizzly review on these cases:

Dan Walter is the Ferarri of cases. All welds are inside, and the finish is outstanding. The cons - aside from the fact that their parent is in bankruptcy, they have only built in locks, i.e., no outer rings to put seperate locks on.

Americase - nice, not the finish of a Dan Walter, but not with the price either, and just as tough. Same lock issue though.

Bear track. They are not pretty. But they are well made. Outside rings built into the frame for your own locks. Not cheap.

Tuffpack. They have one of those vending machine style locks, which are tough to pick. Looks like a golf bag, a good thing. And since you'll need to bring a field case along, pretty convenient.

I took a Tuffpack to Kodiak Island, Alaska and it sat outside in the weather for 15 days. No rust on the lock and no issues with the case.

Other cases I have used, and I have used many, don't measure up.

I suppose Pelican is a decent case. But I had two break. No rifle damage, but I had to replace the cases.

I guess you could get a leather and oak trunk case but while they are more attractive then the Americase, I am not sure how much protection they would offer.

Another route you could go would be to get a Pelican or Starlight case. They are made from a heavy duty injection moulded polymer resin (I think). Inside they use polyurethane foam that you cut out to match your rifle or whatever else you want protected.

I use a Pelican for my bolt guns.... Just seems a DR should have a nicer place to sleep. For that reason, I would choose the Americase. It may even be lighter too.

On a side note;

I have been looking around for a case that has a well done suede and oak (or other premium wood) interior with all the appropriate features.... But also has a very strong construction and a nondescript, indestructible exterior.

Does anyone know of a company that makes a case like this or someone who could?

I've solved the problem with my Blaser combo. With this single (small) gun case containing .300 Win and 9,3x62 scoped bbls., I feel ready for whatever may show up anywhere in the world.

My A. Hollis and Son 450/400 3 inch resides in and does not go anywhere with out it's Americase.

Granted, Oak and Leather look wonderful. However who among us would trust our 10K double rifles to a luggage gorilla throwing our Oak and Leather case into a cargo hole or luggage conveyor?

Oak and Leather are best at home in your gun room while you are showing off your double and drinking a good single malt whisky with friends!

Galazans has a nice selection of Oak cases. But I'm with Rusty - airline handling will destroy a fine case.

I think the Kalispel is about the most useful case for any gun "doubles included" that can be taken down. It's vurtually indestructible and travels well, even around baggage handlers.

Singh,

Congratulations, my friend. Don't you know that you need to show your rifle off now that you have her?

Do post pictures whenever you can.

Cheers!

I reccomend the Pelican.

It has 3-layers of 1.5" foam.

A solid layer on the bottom.
A middle layer (cut to the profile of your gun)
A solid layer on the top.

There's lots of foam between the pieces of the rifle as well.

They have a lifetime (you break it - they replace it) warranty and are tougher than nails.

As you can see everything is completely surrounded by foam.

The Storm cases are good too.

This is the cheapest place I've found them.

I have used several different types of cases over the years...
aluminium, pelican dosocil etc.
I have used the Tuff-Pak on 2 trips to Africa, one trip to Canada and one trip to Calif,
I prefer the Tuff-Pak.
I have 2 of them now, so my wife and I will used them when we go to Zim.
