Need help with my first double PLEASE!!!

This is NOT a "which caliber should I choose" thread!! Here's the deal. I've been slotted to deploy to Afghanistan in Feb/07 (I'm in the National Guard) and I'll finally have the funds to get my first double upon my return late 2008. What I need is a generous soul (or souls) that would be willing to let me handle and shoot some doubles of different calibers so that I can decide which one I'll get. I would like to try anything from 450/400 up to 500NE. 450/400, 450#2, 470 and 500/416 are the main 4 I'm considering with the 500 mainly for the fun factor. I'll get the biggest that I can handle comfortably.

If there's anyone within a 4-6 hour drive of the Greenville, SC(USA) area, who would be willing to grant me such a privilge, I would be most grateful.

A bunch of us also post on AccurateReloading.com.

On the weekend of August 11 to 13 about 20 of us who own double rifles are getting together at Camp Cooley (about two hours south of Dallas) for a weekend of hog hunting, shooting double rifles, eating, drinking and BSing.

There will be LOTS of DRs there that weekend, and I'm sure most of the calibers you are interested in will be there to.

The camp we are staying at only sleeps 12 people, but there are a number of us staying at a local motel. The cost for the weekend, without lodging, is $200 with an additional cost of $50/hog, or three hogs for $100.

If you are interested in double rifles, and want to shoot many different ones, there is no better place than a DRSS weekend.

Rusty, who posts here, is our unofficial leader. He and a few others started the DRSS. If you want more information, drop me a PM

Yeah I've been reading about that. I just moved from Houston too. Unfortunately I don't think I'll be able to make that. Between work schedules, family needs, and military obligations/restrictions I won't be able to do a whole lot of traveling between now and the time I leave. I sure do wish I could!!!

I am going to post my request on AR too I just haven't done so yet. I know there are a rew there who don't post here for one reason or another.

IF you can possibly make it you will see 20 different doubles in calibers ranging from 450/400 to 577 Nitro Express. And the collective knowledge of those present is truly amazing, which knowledge increasesin proportion to the consumption of adult beverages.

I live close to the airport at DFW so transportation would not be a problem. Can pick you up on Friday and have you back to DFW on Sunday.

If you can't, I believe between this site and AR we have at least one member from SC and a couple from Charlotte, NC.

Check out my 600 NE - GROUP BUY thread, maybe it's something you'ed like.

Of course, shoot some really big bore rifles BEFORE commiting $$$.

I appreciate the invite 'Jack but I'm afraid that a 600 might be a little more than I want to shoot. Especially as a first double. I'm really thinking more along the lines of 450/400 or 450#2.
