I noticed on a post earlier this year the auction of 7 Asprey "World Series" DRs in various calibres.Could anyone tell me something about this company? The photos were mind blowing!
Thanks in advance

Old company new to gunmaking. Established 1781 as calico printers. Best known in recent years as jewelers and silversmiths. Entered gunmaking in 1989.

Does this mean they have a gunmaking division or are they like a lot of luxury item providers who contract their work out(to for example to H&H)and then put their stamp on it?

I don't know. It's possible they're buying them in.

While in London, I entered this luxury store about 15 years ago. I stopped at their gun dpt. and was allowed to handle some guns. Best quality they were, very impressive ! I think I remember being told they were private branded by famous gunmakers, whose identity wasn't revealed though. I still have Asprey's gun catalog.

5 shots are a group.

It appears that 'B.J. HORTON. GUN & RIFLE MAKERS. CROMARTY. SCOTLAND' have made double rifles for Asprey, although I am unsure which Asprey it was.

Extract from Holts catalogue 22 June 2006 Lot 587

A VIRTUALLY UNUSED B.J. HORTON .303 SIDELOCK EJECTOR DOUBLE RIFLE, serial no. 01000, 24in. nitro barrels with sight-rib, gold-inlaid open sights for 100, 200 and 300 yards and ramp-mounted bead foresight, rib engraved 'B.J. HORTON. GUN & RIFLE MAKERS. CROMARTY. SCOTLAND', treble-grip action with hand-detachable lockplates, manual safety, external trigger pull adjusting screw, best bouquet and scroll engraving, retaining virtually full original colour-hardening and gold-inlaid borders, the underside gold-inlaid with the maker's name, the triggerplate signed 'inc. Melo Rinniui', 14 1/2in. figured pistolgrip stock with cheekpiece, engraved, gold-inlaid and colour-hardened pistolgrip-cap and heel and toe-plates, weight 8lbs. 8oz. The maker has kindly confirmed that the gun was completed in 1976 on an action and lockplates purchased from William Ford, where he was working at the time under Alan Thornton. He later became the owner of Dan'l Fraser and made a number guns for Asprey gunmaker's in the 1980's
See illustration on page 199 £7000-10000

Norman
