Sorry off topic. But part of my safari and trip plans for South Africa.
Does anyone have any wineries to recommend visiting in South Africa?
Also which wines/brands are highly regarded for quality?
We don't get many South African wines here in Australia so I am not up to date on which are the better wines and brands.
Traditional winery recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks.

NitroX...get thee to the Cape Region, and any tour operator will be able to hook you up with a wine region tour. Areas you might want to include in you tour would probably include Paarl, Stellenbosch, Franschoek among others. There are many, many good wineries in the Cape. KWV is among the largest CO-OPs there, and is a large commercial operation, although they do produce some excellent wines. If you have a couple of days to spend in the area, on day one I would visit a high end wine store in Cape Town, talk to the owner, and perhaps he or she could hook you up with a private tour.

According to my wife, she is the knowlegdeable person in the house when it comes to wines, there are 182 wine estates in RSA. With her help we will go through her books and send you a list of possibilities. On one of the estates the cellars are in the old slave quaters. I will search for it. Will keep you posted.

Mummie and Daddie NitroX didn't raise them stupid.
Writeoff for part of the trip for wine and vineyard research. Most of the rest in eserve against any NitroExpress revenues. It might be a long time before they are any use if ever.

NitroX,
My family and I lived out in the country in the Durbanville winelands (30 mins out of Cape Town) for a good few years; I joined the nearest gun club which was the Valley Gun Club in Paarl - pretty much a trap and skeet club that is very social and it's membership included most of the winemakers in the area... given I am as keen on good wine as good shotguns I was in heaven!
My good friends from Paarl include Paul De Villiers of Landskroon Estates - and old style and historicall estate that has won just about every veritas gold award for their ports and reds - see here http://www.landskroonwines.com/
The Paarl valley also has a selection of other execllent estates that form part of the Paarl Vinters and are all top wineries- see here http://www.paarlwine.co.za/
Not to far from Paarl is Stellenbosch which is pretty much a quaint town with the "original South African wine route" which includes great estates - see here for the best of this area http://www.wineroute.co.za/
You won't go wrong with any of the above - if you want more info on specific cultivars and top brands or an introduction to Paul at Landskroon then pse drop me a email - hope this helps some.
Regards

My wife's the one with all the taste in the outfit and she really enjoyed a Merlot from Bolland-Kelder. So much so, we've been trying to get some here in the US. Good stuff. jorge

Be sure to pick up a Platter's. Great to have and good for restaurant picks as well. Exclusive Books at the airports carries it.

What a strange and funny question! Lemberg Estate in Tulbagh of course www.kapstadt.de/lemberg. AS FAR AS I KNOW I'M THE ONLY PH/WINEMAKER IN SOUTH AFRICA. Our wine estate was featured on German TV six times during the last five years (we are Germans).
Tulbagh is just one hour from Cape Town. 30 Minutes from Tulbagh we offer hunting safaris (bontebock, mountain zebra, eland, springbok, black wildebeest, blue wildebeest, oryx). We even offer 1-day hunts. John, what else do you want?
What other people write about us... http://www.kapstadt.de/lemberg/bericht2.htm
