Where to stay in Jo'burg ie hotels?
      #59765 - 10/07/06 01:15 AM

I'm looking for suggestions on where to stay in Jo'burg? Hotels you have used and liked.

I will look at the Afton Guest House again, especially for a possible one night layover before connecting to Windhoek, but also for possible other days.

Any suggestions?

I've stayed at the Holiday Inn about one mile from the Airport. They have free shuttle service, rooms are clean, and they have a fabulous restaurant with a huge dinner and breakfast buffet.

Ditto on mikeh416Rigby's comments. I stayed there back in 2002.

Note: I can't find the hotel currently listed on Holiday Inn's web site. The hotel may have been sold and is being operated by a different company now. I don't know for sure.

If I remember correctly, there was a Holiday Inn at the airport and one just a little down the road which is the one I'm thinking of. I think it was called Garden Court.

If so, then this is probably it:

Garden Court Johannesburg International Airport Hotel
* Situated just 3km from the Johannesburg International Airport

Looks like it may be operated by Southern Sun now:
Garden Court Joburg International Airport
* A base 3 kilometres from Johannesburg International Airport

Maybe someone else will know for sure.

I just did a search, and the one I stayed at is now called Southern Sun Johannesburg International Airport Hotel.

Yeah, that is the one that is in/at the airport. The link I saw about it said it was 500 meters from the airport. I'm pretty sure I stayed at the other one called Garden Court.

Thanks Bob and Mike.

I also have an offer from a nice South African gentleman to stay at his house. But I will flying through Jo'burg at least four times (maybe five ) unfortunately on this trip so that might be pushing friendship! Luckily not all requiring an overnight stay though.

Plus my wife is flying over separately, so another visit will be needed. A REALLY close hotel is sounding better.

Afton is good, but it is also nice to have some facilities in the hotel especially if it is only a stopover.

If you are wanting to be really close then the hotel at the airport should suffice but if you wouldn't mind a 45 min. drive you could be staying in the quieter peacefull Pretoria in a nice guest house CChunter has been there twice and I could even meet you if you'd like/even pick u up as well.

John
I highly recommed you stay at the Afton House. i have stayed there twice. Louis is an expert at getting you, your guns and luggage in and out of the airport. He knows where to take you to dinner and shopping where it is safe.

He and his wife are excellent hosts.
He will pick you up and then see you out the gate on your departure.
The SAPS firearms people know him and take care of his clients.

His rates are very reasonable.

Nitrox, stay at the Continental as apart from the high standard you can enter the Mall from within. There are restaurants, movie houses, banks etc.You could spend the whole day without going out. Also they arrange day tours(2/3 hours)where they take you to the diamond mines,Mendelas residence and Pretoria. They also take you to the safe shopping area where you can buy artifacts etc.Mind you JoBurg is a dangerous city and you do not go around alone down there.

I like the Colbyn Guestlodge as Frederik is talking about, have stayed there twice and have two nights booked for next week before we will go hunting.

I have stayed 7 times at the Garden Court which WAS a Holiday Inn. The last time I made reservations on the net I believe it was no longer a Holiday Inn but some other chain. They have a good shuttle service and the best breakfast buffet I've had second to none. The steakhouse that is in the Hotel is also very good. Quiet and clean and reasonably priced. It is now in the Southern Sun chain. It is in Kempton Park and the Steakhouse is one of the Spur chain. The dining room is only open for breakfast. They also have a McGinty's Pub but I was never in it.
