Merkle 160-2 in 470
      #59698 - 08/07/06 12:19 AM

Ran across a new Merkle 160-2 in 470 for $7995.00. It seemed less "clubby than my friend's Merkle in 416 Rigby. Is this there lower-end model? No recoil pad but it fit nicer than other Merkle's I've handled. Seem like a fair price? Thanking you in advance,

Dutch

Dutch:

Yes, the 140-2 is Merkel's base model for the safari caliber double rifles - but don't let the base model term disturb you. The better versions basically have more engraving on it, but if you ask me, it's pretty poor.

Regarding the less "clubby" feeling you mentioned, I can't give an opinion as I have never handled a merkel in .416. I handled and shot my .500 NE and a .470. I did not find them clubby at all.

Yes, the price does seem like a good deal to me.

Dutch,

Most Merkels I know of don't come with recoil pads for a good reason.

It allows you to put your preferred choice on AND more importantly
get the LOP correct.

I think the factory did a good thing not fitting recoil pads so take
it as a positive not a negative.

After all, you pay for the pad and it's fitting from the factory even
if you throw it away.

Dutch - the 160-2 is Merkel's Sidelock version of the 470. If you saw one in decent shape for $8K... I'd suggest you R-U-N back and buy it.

They retail for around $25K new...

Gentlemen:
Having read the responses I recalled the shop and they informed me that it was indeed a 140-2. As I was writing this response another dealer from outstate called with an Alex Henry 450 #2 in 85% that was made for a Maharajah. It was manufactured in 1922 and has been to Africa 3 times with it's present owner after having taken 6 buff and other game. Bores are excellent and the dealer is very reputable. Price is under double of the Merkle. LOP at 14 1/2 with some honest wear. Pictures will be here on Monday and I'll keep you posted. Still not ruling out the Merkle at $7999.00 if you think it is still worth it. Thanks for all the input and if I do purchase the Henry I will let anyone interested know the location of the Merkle.

Dutch

If the AH is mechanically "RIGHT" I think that is the way I'd go. If you don't, please PM the dealers info to me, thank you.

Dutch
If you get the 450 No2 let me know, I will share my loads with you.
It is a great calibre.
I have taken deer, wild pigs, coyotes, squirrels, 2 eland, wildebeast, girraffe, 3 cape buff, 2 cow elephants, and 2 bull elephants with my 450 No2.
