I'd like to get the SA's opinion on this web site. Is it truth or BS? Is it safe to travel to SA these day's? I've been hearing about the crime for a while, very much like the MAU MAU of Kenya, killing the white farmers and such. But this stuff is butchery.

I, think the website is very sarcastic especially with the 10 tips below which I quoted from them.

10 TIPS FOR TOURISTS

- Leave your grandmother at home as she will be killed with a hammer.

- Leave your kids at home as they get raped.

- Keep away from rail transport as you will be thrown from a moving train.

- Keep away from combi-taxis as taxi operators shoot at each other.

- Don't travel in a vehicle passing any bridges as you will get a brick through the windscreen.

- Keep a distance from protest marchers as your vehicle windows will be smashed.

- If you are lucky to be alive, only your vehicle will be hijacked.

- Don't overstay on farms as you could be seen as a farmer and get murdered.

- Leave your mobile phone at home as you could be killed for it.

- Be fit as at shopping centres you will have to duck-and-dive to escape the police/robber bullets.

Yes we have a problem with crime but in our major cities and roads. You will be picked up by your PH at the airport normally and be taken to the hunting grounds most of the rural areas aoround the farms away from big towns or cities have almost no crime everyone knows each other and with passers by going pass they have a look out for them employment is good and very close ot zero unemployment. The younger generation try the cities and that is where it gets nasty unemployment leads to crime and etc.

Even staying over in a big city and staying away from bad areas you will be safe. Just ask and you will be told what is safe or not. Don't do stupid thing s like flash money and give money to people on the roads and things like that.

I can't give an opinion as a resident of RSA, of course, but I can give my opinion as one that has visited South Africa four times so far. (In 1998, 2000, 2002, and 2005.) If hadn't felt relatively safe I wouldn't have gone back. And, I hope to return again. I think SafariHunt's comments are spot on.

By the way, the Jacaranda trees in Pretoria are beautiful!!

I have been to SA 20+ times and have never had any problem. Same as anywhere... use common sense and you will be fine.

I do notice quite a difference between Joberg and Cape Town though with Cape Town being the better of the two.

SA has got to be one of the most beautiful countries in the world. It would be a shame if someone had the opportunity to visit and didn't because of their fear of being murdered/raped/hijacked/etc.
