Cow elephants with young calves
      #59541 - 03/07/06 03:21 AM

Just for discussion.

Reading Will Stewart's book on hunting tuskless cow elephants and other discussions on line, I note it is the practice to not shoot tuskless cow elephants with young calves at foot.

Now many countries allow cows or females with young to be shot, as long as the calf is shot as well, eg moose in Sweden.

With elephant numbers being so high in Zimbabwe would not it be acceptable to shoot a tuskless cow elephant as long as the calf was also despatched?

What do you think?

PS I know it is probably not within the law or regulations, this is not a discussion on the legal merits but the game management merits.

I was within 10 meters of numerous tuskless cows with young when hunting in Zim last year, that I obviously due to the laws couldn't shoot, and was thinking about the very same thing back then.

As shooting moose calves in Norway (and the rest of scandinavia) is part of our game management, I personally would have no problem shooting a elephant calf in such situations in Zim or elsewhere if given the chance.

In fact, shooting moose calves is a vital part of moose managment, so I can think of no reason that it would be any different for elephant managment. It would most likely solve a lot of the elephant overpopulation problems in not only Zim, but Botswana too.

My deer club practices TQM and when they need to cull
the deer it is the does and young that get shot.

In addition, we have to shoot at least one doe each year.

I can see your point.

Presently in Zim it is not legal to shoot the cow plus the calf, so great effort and much time is spent trying to find tuskless cow ele without a calf or with a non-dependent calf. From a population control standpoint, shooting the calf would make good sense.

However, as one of the reasons for shooting tuskless cow ele is elimination of the tuskless gene, perhaps the calf should be shot on that basis alone.
