Does anyone know how the 9.3mm Nosler Ballistic Tips in 250 gr work on African plains game?
I may try to develop a load for my 9.3x74R double for them for slightly longer ranged plains game hunting. Game such as gemsbok, springbok, zebra, eland, kudu - sized game.
I have never been impressed with the Nosler Ballistic Tips (too soft and fragile) but those were the earlier ones. So anyone with knowledge on their capabilities would be welcome to comment. Otherwise I will stick to the tried and true loadings I already have.

John,
Unless you want to experiment I would stick with your "tried and true loadings" and for two basic reasons.
1) The combination of gun, shooting ranges etc will mean that a few points of extra ballistic coefficient will be meaningless...in fact I don't think you would see any differerence between a round nose and a Ballistic Tip.
2) You can spend the dollars on something else

My "tried and true" loading is the 286 gr Woodleigh Protected Point which killed buffalo cows and younger bulls without any problems.
I bought several boxes of Nosler BTs at the same time to try on deer.
Not sure how they would regulate but of course with a Tikka I can set the barrels for them if necessary.
I would like a bit more speed out of my loadings as the current ones are very mild and a bit more rainbow than I would like for plains game.
Of course I can also borrow the PHs ("Ndumo") rifle which is the 8x68S which I am also keen to try out.

I don't beleive Nosler makes the 250 BT's any more. That said your load development would be limited to what you have on hand or can possibly find still sitting on shelves.

I shot some Nosler 250 BT last trip. Surprisingly, they held together, which is remarkable in itself becuase in .30 caliber down they have always broken up. However, penetration was quite shallow compared to other bullets. I would stick to the Woodleighs for your double.

I think my 9.3 loads barely make 2100 fps with a 286 grainer. But they still did the job.
I don't see any purpose at all for a .378 Weatherby except to make powder and barrel makers rich. If one wants increased big bore killing power I much prefer to go up a calibre or three.
Did Weatherby make one in a double?
No for increased range and a flatter trajectory in a double for plains game a .300 H&H or similar or maybe a 8x75R has their attraction. Even the set of .30-06 barrels I have waiting for me.

I have a friend who has a 9.3 double and he has had good results with the 250 gr Swift A Frame. He just came from Zim and bagged a nice leopard with it. I got both barrells to print to the same point of impact at 100 yards with the 250 gr Swift.

Nitro,
Have you tried the new Woodleigh 9.3 250 gr Protected Point yet?
Woodleigh bullets are fairly expensive here (USA). How is their price compared to Nosler bullets in Australia? (I realize Nosler makes Ballistic Tips, Accubonds, and Partitions which will have different price ranges.)

No. It sounds like it might be worth trying.
Ideally I would go for a 320 gr FMJ/SP for anything really big (if they work wel in my rifle and can be driven fast enough), ignore the 286 gr loadings and have something like a 230 to 250 gr for medium sized game. As long as I don't have to adjust the barrels too much.

John, you answered your own question by saying your woodleigh projectiles knocked buffalo flat.
"When your on a good thing, stick to it"
Apart from anything else they are Aussie made and cheaper than most of the imported big game projectiles.. Al

Here in Norway, they cost almost the same as the Norma Oryx in common calibers. norma loaded 250 grain Woodleigh roundnose for the .358 Norma magnum before, and now they load them for the .404 Jeffrey, 470 Nitro, soon the .505 Gibbs and the .500 Nitro . Other safari clibers theyre coming with is the 458 Lott , Woodleigh are good bullets, and a combination of woodleigh soft /solid will be helpfull in the most of the hunting youll encounter.
BTW. How is the .338 300 grain soft/solid? What velocity isit ,eant for?

I'd simply use the same thing I always use, the 286 gr Nosler Partition, and be done with it!

I have shot quite a bit of game with the 9,3x74R. For a Soft I think the 286 gr Woodleigh is a good choice. From beaver to buff, pigs, deer, black bear, kudu, impala to zebra it has performed perfectly. The Nosler 286 Partition has done well too.
Add some 286 gr Woodleigh solids and any animal on the Planet is fair game.
