Heym Questions
      #59070 - 20/06/06 08:36 PM

Ok people, I have a couple of questions regarding the "guts" of the current production Heym boxlock SxS double rifle action.

Do these rifles have.............

1...Coil or Vee mainsprings?

2...Bushed strikers?

3...Rebounding locks?

4...Intercepting sears?

5...Breech pin or stockbolt?

I'm hoping New Guy and others can shed some light here.
I've never had the chance to check out the locks on the Heym doubles.
TIA.

4seventy - Good questions.

I'm not sure about the mainsprings in the BL. They use coil springs in the SL, but I honestly don't recall on the BL. I'll find out for you.

It does not have brushed srikers.

It does have rebounding locks.

It does have intercepting sears.

It has a stockbolt.

They are not on the inside obviously, but it does come standard with an articulated front trigger, cocking indicators and non-auto safety.

I think I've got some photos of the assembled action without the stock. I'll see if I can find them for you and post one.

In the interim, here's the outside of a "PH" and a "Safari"... mechanically, they are the same gun. The "PH" has less shaping on the action and no engraving.

OK, as normal for my posts...more questions. I am familiar with some of the terms here, but it would help us all learn if they were described in detail. 4Seventy: can you tell us what each of these are and what significance they have for you?
1. Coil or main springs.
2. Bushed Strikers.
3. Rebounding locks.
4. Intercepting sears.
5. Breech pin or stock bolt.
What is good about one verus the other?
Which one would you rather have and why?
As always I thank all of you for the effort and information given!

Armbar.

Be VERY careful. Demand a 14 day inspection.

And take a Q tip with solvent and run it through the grooves on the barrel, especially where the top rail meets the barrel.

Do the same thing with the stock with using something like Rennisance wax.

And make the seller pay for your suppiles.

That's all I am going to say. Just be careful.

Didn't get screwed as of yet. And seeing I am in the capable hands of Chris Sells at HeymUSA, I doubt that's going to happen.

There's a lesson to all in this.

When I got the rifle home, I gave it a thorough cleaning. On cleaning the barrels I noticed something I first took to be rust. I then commenced with the Q tip cleaning. On the top of the barrel where the bridge joins the barrel I pulled out a lot of gunk. It looked like wax.

After I removed all of the crap, I noticed a solder line on the top of the barrel about 8 inches long. Not something one likes to see on a new rifle.

I took it to Chris to look at, and he noticed two small cracks where the trigger assembly was bored into the stock. Nothing huge, but not something you should see on a new rifle.

Chris found out from Heym that while I bought this rifle this year, she was manufactred in 2001, and changedhands from a German dealer to oneherin the US. What I was pulling out of the crevices with a Q Tip could very well have been old grease covered by 5 years of dust.

I know the guy that sold me the rifle, and it is my opinion that he would never wax a barrel down.

Even on new rifles, we need to remember that they may be several years old, and have been around the block several times at gun shows and perhaps even violated once or twice by double gun perverts.

With tht said, I think an inspection period for a new rifle should not be out of the question.

I'll let you know what Heym does, but I don't think I have to worry.

I haven't met Chris yet (will in August), but from what I hear he'll take care of you.

Your initial post was vague and I apologize if I was initially harsh with asking if you got screwed.

Good luck with this.

Apologies for taking so long to get back to this but I'm away from the computer again with work and this will continue for a while.
Newguy,
Thanks for those details and also for the photos.
I'd really like to see a photo of the action internals if you manage to find one.
I'll most likely have a few more questions to ask as well.

armbar,
Regarding the coil or vee springs, and also the bushed strikers, my question was just for interest sake.
It wouldn't really worry me whether a double was fitted with either type of spring or if it had or didn't have bushed strikers.
If I had a choice though I would select to have the strikers bushed and to have vee rather than coil springs.

Rebounding locks, intercepting sears, and stockbolt, all make for a better gun IMO if the double is going to be used a lot.
I'll cover the reasons at some point when I have a little more time back at the computer.

Grizz, don't worry I'll be careful.
Cheers

Not yet.

After months of back and forth, we agreed to let New England Custom tell us wat they thought.

It is a nice rifle, don't get me wrong. But to me the finish problems are inexcusable - exposed solder on the top of the barrel, small cracks on the interior of the trigger guard stock.

They do make a fine rifle, but mine in my opinion should have never made it out of the shop.
I am not mad with Heym. It was my decision to buy the rifle.

I am hopeful that Heym will do the right thing.

I just thought of something - is there any chance that removing the excess solder from the barrels will through off the regulation?
